Halloween is a concept that can take your child some time to wrap their brain around. And for good reason. From exploring what’s real and what’s pretend, to the novelty of candy distribution with strangers, it’s a day like no other. And can be a real anomaly when it comes to the comfort of daily routines (and your child’s understanding of social norms). I love this video of little Lennon - shared to IG by his mother, michaela_gmc - which shows him providing an explanation of the holiday and its customs. As you’ll see, his speech literally isn’t for anyone else. He’s awaiting his chance to participate… but also very much processing his own understanding of a highly unusual situation: Today, I’m a spooky ghost. And I’m here to give you spooky candy. Definitely not your typical Thursday. My best advice - as always - is to follow your child’s lead here. Some young children really lean into the novelty of the holiday, while others can find it a little overwhelming at first. Read your child’s cues and participate to the extent that it remains fun.
