Yesterday I was honoured to summate the new Lib Dem policy 'From Local Roots to Global Reach: a Liberal Vision for Universities.' I spoke particularly about the financial barriers affecting more and more students each year, and our plans to set this right and widen participation

Henry Tufnell thinks democratic accountability disappears if voters decide to send Labour home packing…
Electoral reform was one of the headline announcements in Andy Burnham's Labour conference speech However, not all Labour MPs are enthusiastic about moving away from FPTP "I saw on the doorstep ahead of the Welsh elections how democratic accountability can be lost under proportional representation," Henry Tufnell MP told PolHome In 2022, Angela Rayner said she was “yet to be convinced by PR", while John Healey described it as "peverse" in the run-up to the 2011 AV referendum, report @harriet_symonds & @matilda__martin politicshome.com/news/articl…

This has to be one of the least self aware things ever written by a man in politics: "Where I can, I've brought more women in. I got my wife elected at the Locals this year after seeing her shadow me in my first term and recognising the talent and skills she had too."
I said this in the YC Hustings, that I want to make sure young women feel empowered to come forward and take on roles. I agree we shouldn't have women-only lists or DEI-style posts, but that all YCs should be given more opportunities and chances and barriers should be broken down. Where I can, I've brought more women in. I got my wife elected at the Locals this year after seeing her shadow me in my first term and recognising the talent and skills she had too. As Association Chairman we have held CWO nights, made new positions, encouraged women to take up roles and always been willing to help. By having more young people, especially young women at the front, others will follow. I think @KemiBadenoch alone shows that! Now full disclosure: I am not a woman. I am not going to pretend I can understand why or what the barriers and reasons for not standing are, but I can absolutely guarantee that I will listen (and have been) to young women in our party as to what I could do as National Chair to help. At Party Conference, my diary was filled with conversations, listening to what YCs from across the UK wanted, felt and were missing. We have groups like @CYoungWomen, @cwowomen, @Blue_Beyond_ and more who are doing so much to bring young people into the conversation. With me, my door is open, as it has been since the very start of the campaign with my YC Survey: matthewgoodwinfreeman.uk/yc #MoreWithMatthew

That the antisemitic entryists who have captured the Green Party, are being antisemitic, is no surprise. That the Party Leader skipped this vote and failed to use his authority to argue against them, is an astonishing act of weakness. Real Greens are welcome in the Lib Dems…

Reflecting on the PM’s leader’s speech. It was a cracking piece of oratory. It also included loads of Lib Dem ideas e.g. on social care, Europe and water - this is good news for us as a party and as a country. The task for the Lib Dems is to make sure these are more than words.

Student finance is uncomfortable territory for Lib Dems, but we can't just bury our heads in the sand. Those of us in positions of responsibility have a duty to fix what's broken, even when it's uncomfortable. My piece for @libdemvoice👇 libdemvoice.org/winning-back…

I listened to Ed Davey on the @BBCr4today this morning, and frankly, I think he missed the point. The idea that we're keeping the triple lock to help millennials is at best for the birds, and at worst downright insulting. I say that as a millennial. The case for the triple lock is a worthy one - stopping pensioner poverty. I want that as much as anyone. But pensioners are now less likely to be in poverty than children or working age adults. We talk about fairness, yet our answer is to give the same increase to every pensioner, treating the one choosing between heating and eating exactly the same as the one with millions in the bank. I can see no moral or fiscal case for above inflation rises for millionaires. That money should go where it's needed most - to everyone in poverty, not just one group. It could help fund free personal care, a policy that would disproportionately benefit older people. Ed is right that we shouldn't pit one generation against another. But intergenerational inequality is already one of the defining injustices of our time, and this would further entrench it. Worse, it gaslights an entire generation into believing it's for our benefit. Telling millennials we're keeping the triple lock to help us in 30 years' time is nonsense. We're on course to be the first generation worse off than our parents. We're locked out of the housing market, paying higher taxes, repaying student loans that never seem to shrink, and putting off having children because of the cost of living. I joined this party because I care about fairness and tackling inequality, and that has to include inequality between generations. This line, and this decision, fails on both counts. Ed needs to think again.

In today's @NavigatePol weekly roundup, I analysed how candidates surnames' dictate how well they do within party slates in multi-member wards. 72% of the time, the candidate 1st alphabetically received the most votes. Surnames starting with Z topped their slates just 6% or the time!!

The PISA 2025 results are out today. Some quick insights. - The major story is very significant global decline. The last PISA study was in 2022, and saw big declines in reading and maths scores from 2018. Obviously the pandemic played a part. - But this 2025 round has seen further falls even from the 2022 lows! Things haven't gone back to normal post-pandemic - they've got worse. Every generation thinks the generation below is less smart - but this time they might be right!

We will keep fighting for an education system where children get the right support, in the right setting, at the right time, wherever they live.
Nearly everyone knows someone with special educational needs or a disability. For too long, they've been let down by a broken system. It's time they got the help they need.

Incredibly greatful to @LibDemWomen for awarding me the Vera Head Memorial Grant to attend @ALDC's kickstart weekend last month. It was brilliant to learn the theory behind so much of our campaigning (which I was able to put into practice immediately in Streatham! 💪)

We’re sanctioning Russia at speed and scale. Today’s measures, together with the upcoming 21st sanctions package, will add 250 individuals and entities to the Russia sanctions regime. This is our biggest round of individual designations since Moscow’s 2022 full-scale invasion, and includes also the EU’s largest-ever cyber sanctions package. The financial backbone of Russia’s war machine is the main target. Every measure weakens Moscow’s ability to wage war. My doorstep ahead of today’s Foreign Affairs Council ↓
