Those Who Forget the Lessons of History Are Doomed to Repeat Them.
(paraphrase of George Santayana)
You know .....
If America were to adopt a single payer health plan,
With generous coverage for everybody,
And we called it TRUMPCARE,
Trump might just spring for it.
It would have to be headquartered in the Trump Building with a large statue of Trump outside.
But if that were to be the price for fixing healthcare in America, I would pay it.

It’s going to require emotional maturity from all parties to accept that there are things we will agree on, and things we will not, and we have to make progress on the things we do agree on or we will be feckless. Now is not the time to make a power struggle over the Dem party!
If God made Donovan, the Wkend, and Green Day,
Then this must be the Book of Job and we are truly accursed.
They all watch a Christmas Carol ten times every holiday season.
They know about Dickens.
As for, whether they have learned the same lesson that Jacob Marley taught Scrooge ...
Well that is to be determined.
Replying to @cturnbull1968
Well said. Now, will you explain to all of the maga voters what a Dickens novel is?
Arab Spring did not end well for progressives.
The Arab Spring Blue Tuesday analogy may be apt
But I don't like those tea leaves one bit.
We get plenty of tourism down here already.
Austin has South by Southwest, for God's Sake.
But LGBT who might have some cause for concern can now breathe a big sigh of relief and enjoy their stay.
I consider myself a member of the progressive branch of the Democratic party.
However, going after Schumer and Jeffries now is just the wrong play.
They can't get anything passed unless the Progressive Wing of the party votes with them.
(The same would hold with Progressive speakers and centrists having some votes in the Democratic coalition.)
Smoke filled rooms (or non-smoking rooms nowadays) are where internal disagreements about policy can be worked out.
For the time being, unity is what got us where we are now. Republican unity is what allowed the GOP to steamroller us for the last two years.
We can give the Republicans a taste of their own medicine if we stand together in a united front.
This is just wrong.
In politics, everyone should meet with everybody and talk with everybody.
You can completely fork them over later with your actions if that is what is called for.
Even opposing generals in war listen to messengers who approach with a white flag.
For the same reason that one tells the truth to a priest in a confession box.
You appear before moral authorities in your true form.
Not a sanitized form which could be a hypocritical invention.
Yes.
Affirmative.
Si.
And Bezos may want to start recalibrating his political alliance strategy for a harsh new world.
Today merits a giant vat of vino served to 200 of your best friends, chocolate pie for everyone and dancing on the roof.
After that we go for pizza.
I frequently disagree with Mr. McFaul.
(Although I root for the Ukraine as much as he does)
But his analysis of the midterm election is one of the best out here.
McFaul cuts right to "the dog that didn't bark".
That dog that didn't bark is life and death.
Remember what didn't happen yesterday.
ICE did not intimidate or arrest voters at polling stations.
Trump failed to disenfranchise Californian voters.
Trump's planned shenanigans in Alaska no longer matter. Dems already won the Senate.
And now we don't have to wait anxiously to see what the House clerk will do on January 3rd regarding the seating of newly elected members.
Democrats won big yesterday.
But so too did American democracy.
I suspect Trump cutting off military aid to Israel is his "punishment" of Netanyahu for encouraging him to bomb Iran.
That decision did result in the rout we just saw.
But Trump was the guy who was dumb enough to listen to Netanyahu in the first place.
Really Dumb - with a b at the end.
Argentina is not a friendly place for millionaires.
There is a reason so much Argentine big money maintains homes in Miami.

I showed this quote to the Troll who lives under my neighborhood bridge, making postings on X.
Mr. Troll says:
a) Is this Victor Hugo American? Or is he some kind of French guy? He is probably here illegally.
b) He probably supports the right of criminals to steal bread whenever they want instead of being in jail where they belong.
c) He is probably one of these crippled rights guys if my hunch is right.
“to limit poverty without limiting wealth, to create vast fields of public and popular activity, to have, like Briareus, a hundred hands to stretch out on all sides to the exhausted and the feeble, to employ the collective power in the great duty of opening workshops for all arms, schools for all aptitudes and laboratories for all intelligences, to increase wages, to diminish suffering, to balance the ought and the have, that is to say, to proportion enjoyment to effort and gratification to need, in one word, to evolve from the social structure, for the benefit of those who suffer and those who are ignorant, more light and more comfort; this is, let sympathetic souls forget it not, the first of fraternal obligations, this is, let selfish hearts know it, the first of political necessities.”
― Victor Hugo, Les Misérables
Choosing a religion is like choosing a marriage partner.
All human beings have value and worth.
We go to the altar with one we find notably better.
true, different religions at different times in one's life. but it is hardly my opinion alone that Buddhism--as a philosophy, rather than a religion--is indeed wise, "mature" in a way that other religions that are more messianic, zealous for converts, & intolerant of one another, are not.
what have I said here do you find "not useful"--?
In many academic disciplines, the philosophical "is ought" problem is
1) We OUGHT to do better stuff.
2) Doing the same old IS what we are going to be doing.
3) Lagrangian multipliers in our discipline have to satisfy the following constraint:
If YOU do something different, WE don't give you a job ever.
