When did it become acceptable for civil servants to undertake party-political spin? This is a clear breach of the Civil Service Code and ought to be taken down.

The leader our country needs.πŸ‘‡πŸ»
Slavery was an evil in which people from every continent and region participated. We should be honest about the whole history, not select the parts that are politically convenient today, especially given Britain's leading role in ending the transatlantic slave trade. If Caribbean countries are asking Britain for a formal apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, will they also be asking the same of the descendants of African kingdoms, rulers and merchants who captured, sold and profited from the trade? On demands for reparations, whether through cash or debt relief, we have been down this track before. Twenty-five years ago, Jubilee 2000, Drop the Debt and Make Poverty History argued that cancelling the debts of poorer countries would give them a fresh start. More than $100 billion of debt was eventually written off, but many of those countries have since built up even bigger debts. Labour are already spending too much on Britain's welfare state, now is not the time for Andy Burnham to be providing global welfare. There is no reason British taxpayers today should be held financially responsible for things that happened generations before any of us were born. And I have even less patience for political elites in commonwealth countries who don’t know how to make their own citizens prosperous now looking for another opportunity to blame Britain. As Prime Minister, Andy Burnham should be Britain’s greatest defender. Instead, he is writing articles saying we need to confront our history (as if we haven't done enough of that) and considering another formal historical apology. Tony Blair already expressed Britain’s deep sorrow and regret for our role in the slave trade nearly twenty years ago. There is no need to do so again. This is all another navel-gazing distraction. The Commonwealth should be looking forward, not endlessly backwards. That means economic partnerships to make us all richer and deeper military and security cooperation against common threats. If every Commonwealth summit becomes an exercise in presenting Britain with demands for cash then we need to start asking if it is worth the effort.

This is the way. Ugliness in our built environment is a choice β€” one we do not need to make. Why do millions visit Oxford, Cambridge, or Bath? Not to see identikit grey cubes & orange boxes. It’s time to build places that lift hearts β€” with beauty & with respect for heritage.
An extension to Oxford designed with "cues from the [existing] skyline" in mind might look something like this. One day we will build spires again.

Thought Badenoch's speech was good last year. This surpassed it. Drew a crystal clear line between herself and Andy Burnham on major issues of substance. But even more significantly, draw a line between herself and Farage. There will be no uniting the right. She wants to crush Reform.

Inheritance Tax punishes people for working hard, saving, and leaving something for their children. That’s why we Conservatives are taking the first step towards abolishing it completely. We will scrap Inheritance Tax completely on the family home and raise the threshold for other assets to Β£1 million for a couple. We are on the side of people who work hard.

It’s taxpayers’ money. Well said @Helen_Whately.
"Isn't it patronising? To tell people how to spend their own money?" @bbcnickrobinson asks shadow work and pensions secretary Helen Whately, as the Conservatives promise to prevent benefit claimants from spending their welfare payments on alcohol, cigarettes and gambling.

The next @Conservatives government must repeal the β€œsocio-economic duty” within the 2010 Act. It was gross neglect to leave it in place. Commencement will not only warp every public service & undermine fairness, it will tie up basic governance in a grim web of judicial reviews.

We need to get serious on defence, that means spending at least 3% of GDP on defence by 2030. Anything after that is too late.

If people don't already know that: - It's wrong to rape - It's wrong to have sex with children - Men and women are equal The answer isn't to tell them when they come here, and hope for the best. It's to never let them into our country in the first place.
🚨 NEW: The Government is handing out posters to asylum seekers telling them not to have sex with girls or mutilate their genitals

A codified British constitution would be an historic mistake. Parliamentary sovereignty allows democracy to drive political evolution. Fundamental law, by contrast, would paralyse our administration & subject politics to unaccountable judicial supremacy. telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/08…

Sir John is absolutely right. The Education Tax is terrible public policy. Unpleasant ideology has disrupted kids’ education, put families through immense stress, & forced great schools to close. And to what end? The Education Tax has failed on its own terms: teacher numbers.
Sir John Major makes the essential point. Parents who send children to private school save the state money. Labour’s tax on them has failed. Now the state has 2,000 fewer teachers than when Conservatives left office. So we will reverse this futile, vindictive policy.

My parents sacrificed to give me the best possible start in life. They weren’t wealthy; they worked hard. But the Education Tax would’ve stopped them in their tracks. @Conservatives believe in levelling up opportunities for all schools β€” not levelling-down & punishing aspiration

We must abolish this dreadful policy. The cost of asylum entries to the taxpayer is already crippling. The plans for β€œcommunity” / β€œuniversity sponsorship” are jaw-dropping invitations for abuse & chain migration. We need to reduce asylum flows & assert control over our borders
New safe and legal routes for refugees to come to the UK will begin to rollout in the autumn, giving genuine refugees a pathway to rebuild their lives. Our new community sponsorship scheme will allow approved groups to choose the refugees they sponsor, taking responsibility for their housing, integration and supporting them into work. Trusted universities will be able to directly sponsor refugees through a new refugee study route. A new refugee work sponsorship route is expected to open next year. All arrivals will have refugee status, undergo strict biometric screening, criminality checks and health assessments before arrival, to ensure support reaches those in genuine need. Numbers will start small and build over time, ensuring the routes remain controlled and sustainable while public confidence is restored in Britain's immigration system. The first refugee arrivals are expected by autumn 2027.

Stamp Duty is just an egregious example of a broader problem β€” excessive taxation is crushing growth & individual opportunity in our country. By abolishing SDLT on primary residences, the @Conservatives will free up market mobility & support aspiration. thetimes.com/money/tax/artic…
