I had the huge privilege of recording a conversation with @Samstricko181 on behaviour… there is a huge depth to his knowledge and such generosity in his sharing ⬇️
When you are in a classroom with 30 kids there’s only so much theory that will work
When you lead a year group or are a DSL there’s only so much theory that will work
When you run a school there’s only so much theory that will work
Theory & reality are often not the same

Implementation of restorative practises is part of the problem. The no exclusion policy, the rights-only approach & now the 'presumption of mainstream' policy are all destroying learning & teaching for all. @theSNP has a lot to answer for!!
It is horrific how education leaders allow this to persist. School teachers in Scotland routinely report to me how bad behaviour is, because they have no permitted strategies to handle disruption beyond conversational, therapeutic, or restorative approaches. That’s a political and leadership failing. We know how to manage behaviour, and failing to allow teachers to do so is scandalous.
There should be serious consequences for those who permit this situation to endure. But Scottish education apparently doesn’t believe in consequences at any level.
A major issue is the IDSR narrative that suspensions and exclusions need to come down over time - certainly that is how it’s being interpreted. This will cause schools to allow even more poor behaviour to go unchecked..,
On the back off a clip posted on @TTRadioOfficial discussing lack of sanctions/effective consequences, some of the teacher responses are awful reading...
I still hold that one pupil should not be allowed to undermine the learning of 29 other children & disproportionately consume the teacher’s time.
The bottom line is everything costs money. If you want more you have to fund more.
Schools do not have enough staff to make SEND reforms work, union warns bbc.in/3O4QJc4
A really positive thing to prepare a child for school & to access the curriculum is to get them reading books, actual physical books, and lots of them from as early as possible....
More and more countries are banning social media for U16s. Rightly so. Why is it so hard for England to make this decision….
Some of the comments about how hard it is to parent under 5s without unlimited access to screens is frightening. What did parents do before screens were invented for thousands of years of human history…..
I’ve said so many times that restorative chats without consequences cause more harm than good. Kids quickly realise there are no consequences. A chat often isn’t a consequence.
“Would the NHS use ‘restorative conversations’ after an assault?”
JP questions whether serious incidents in schools are sometimes met with “restorative conversations” rather than clear consequences - asking:
Would any other profession handle it this way?
It’s a powerful moment that’s already sparking debate.

Some people will send you big emails with endless things to do going into a holiday/weekend or while you’re at those non-working points. This is often a reflection of their poor organisation & it ends up being the recipient who has the monkey passed on.

Having a weekend & holiday email embargo is a game changer. There’s something cathartic about knowing the white noise stops going into these key points. We can use the lazy line of but we are all adults…. But not all adults possess emotional intelligence.
If it was only 30 minutes then I think that’s to be expected as a member of SLT but it’s significantly more than this for so many leaders.
Schools should not be ‘call centres’, warns teaching union as research reveals that nearly half of SLT staff spend more than 30 minutes a week calling parents

Often with behaviour a child simply needs to be told no. They need clear boundaries.
