At least in the US, housing production has inversely tracked the rise in housing regulations. So we're in a predicament, do we want houses to code that are less likely to catch on fire or do we want housing to be affordable so young families can have kids? I'll take the latter. It gets grosser when you realize increased cost causes increased reliance on the banks. Increased bank reliances causes a reliance on steady "corporate" jobs rather than less predictable self employment. I know a guy who would be building houses and buildings for people but took a job with a corporation simply to better secure a construction loan. A loan that wouldn't be so high if he could just build at the pace he could afford on the land he owns (which is what my grandfather did in the 40's...). When someone says we need to increase safety through permitting, we need to understand that we are going to often reduce access and literally birth rate.
