Building on experimental evidences, we introduce stochastic trade-offs leading to flexible trade-off curves rather than rigid constraints, enabling evolutionary branching and offering a fresh perspective on how variability in high-dimensional trait space can drive diversification

Excited to share latest work of @LIPh_Lab out in @PhysRevLett! We’ve taken a fresh look at ecological community dynamics by extending the generalized Lotka-Volterra (GLV) model to include temporal stochastic fluctuations in species interactions. Link: journals.aps.org/prl/abstrac… 1/3
Using dynamical mean field theory, we introduce “annealed disorder” in the interaction strengths—a form of environmental noise where each species faces a dynamic environment influenced by all others. We found new behaviors in species coexistence and abundance distributions 2/3
Fluctuating interactions boost species coexistence and create a “rare species” pool, supporting biodiversity’s resilience (insurance theory). This work opens the door to new methods in large ecosystem modeling and provides predictions that align closely with real-world data! 3/3
