The Agentic Scientist: Orchestrating Coding Agents for Automated Scientific (Co-)Discovery
Blog: pub.sakana.ai/agentic-scient…
GitHub: github.com/SakanaAI/AI-Scien…
arXiv: arxiv.org/abs/2610.18933
Since 2024, we’ve used The AI Scientist as a way to test how far AI alone can take scientific research, from v1 to v2 to the paper published in Nature earlier this year. The Agentic Scientist is the next step in that line of work, built for the era of coding agents.
Coding agents such as Codex and Claude Code now carry out long software tasks on their own. Handing them a research problem, however, tends to produce a strong hyperparameter optimizer rather than a scientist: scores go up, but ideas stay narrow, and the reasons for the gain are rarely examined.
The Agentic Scientist makes the research loop explicit. It wraps off-the-shelf coding agents in a scaffold that controls what they see, what they write, how they are evaluated, and how results are handed to the next stage.
Parallel workers test hypotheses against rubrics defined before any experiment runs, share successes and failures through a common memory, and then ablate the winning program to generate evidence.
We used an early version of the system to study Error Diffusion, a biologically motivated alternative to backpropagation. Our researchers set the question and the rubric, chose directions at each stage, and verified the results, references, and claims before submission. The resulting paper was accepted as an oral presentation at ALIFE 2026. In autonomous runs, the system also raised Doc-to-LoRA retrieval accuracy from 52% to 98% on multi-needle tasks and designed a learned evolution strategy that improves over its CMA-ES reference on unseen tasks.
Alongside it we release AutoIllustrate, a pipeline for scientific figures that keeps an editable draw.io file as the source of truth, so every diagram can be corrected by hand.
Humans define the question and the standards of evidence; agents expand the experiments researchers can run. We call this Co-Discovery, and we are releasing both systems as open source for the community to build on.

We have got to stop saying that AI fluency is a technical skill. The moment we do, half of the population thinks they can't do it. The reality is that AI fluency is a social skill—it's about building trust and an understanding of limitations while clearly communicating needs.

Was chatting with @svembu ji this morning about limits of AI. I asked him what’s left for us once models commoditize reasoning.
He said and I quote (with consent) -
"Nature, Nurture, Culture, and Scripture."
Liked that perspective. Intelligence is no longer the moat :)

I’m no longer sure what “intellectual property” means when intellect becomes free.

One of the most compelling parts about working at an ElonCo was the agility to pivot to whatever the most important problem was.
One day I said: I wasn’t hired to go after spam, but a tsunami is coming and I’m going to drop everything to focus on that.
The org is so flat and agile that your title is basically meaningless. Anyone can sound the alarm about a problem and solve it themselves—or rally the team to join them.
This is how startups work but it’s very hard to make it work in a larger company.

I've done a complete U-turn on my opinion on open source AI. We should be careful (and probably disallow release) of models on par with current open source Astra/Opus level models.
AI is now reverse engineering games from binaries and remaking them. Reverse engineering games is a very hard problem. If this is possible then reverse engineering banking software, ID systems (Aadhaar), flights, etc is possible too. A game ships its binary to every player. Bank and Aadhaar backends are protected by servers, but it's unlikely the security teams at these are smarter than advanced AI that can do this to games.
We are protected rn because a Claude will refuse to tick "I'm not a robot" on websites. When OSS models don't respect that, we have a looming cybersecurity problem. Apologies I didn't see this earlier.

Release 🚨
America dot gov is boring. I am happy to release 275k public Indian gov documents parsed from 15k gov websites. 322k official PDFs and on 128 topics, available to plug and play into any RAG frameowrk of your choice. Both raw data and cleaned data available in csv, parquet and SQLite format. At least 50k pages are useful. :D
Will be updating this to 20 Million documents by month end (process running on JarvisLabs autonomously. Happy to share tracking link for those interested)
Go build your Indian gov chatbot. No license, no credits needed. <3
Where does money invested into the AI buildout actually go?
For every $100 flowing into the supply chain:
- $50 to chips
- $20 to power
- $15 to networking
- $15 to cooling, buildings, and land

Introducing our State of Markets pt 2, along with a companion podcast where we unpack the data and discuss what comes next.
Tech is the everything cycle.
Supply: putting the buildout in context, just passed railroads as % of GDP. The wisdom of Elon is real: the factory (or the datacenter!) is the product.
Demand: diffusion is so, so early. Median AI vendor spending in the top 1% of companies is 8x that of the top 10%. Only about 30% of S&P 500 companies report a quantified AI impact, which means there’s a substantial opportunity in connecting models to a company's data and workflows. Diffusion into companies is one of the main themes of the next 5 years.
We’re entering the agent work period. Only a few million users today, but applicable to billions of internet users with massive surplus created. META/GOOG monetize US users at $200+ per year today. Agent opportunity is much higher.
Mega-trends the next 5 years: Consumer agents, Robotics, Autonomy, AI x bio, Personal health, Diffusion into enterprise, New era of American Dynamism.

Build your own harness, folks!
One of the biggest benefits of building my own meta harness is how smoothly I can switch between models.
I feel like this is becoming more important as model release times shrink. RSI will only scale releases.
This has been one of the best decisions I made since last November.
Switching models can really break things, but it shouldn't. If it does, your setup isn't ideal for this insane release cycle we are in. You need to fix that now.

Today we have 3 new DeepMind Institute essays:
How can we control misbehaviour in agent swarms?
How should we orchestrate complex networks of AIs and people?
The case for making AGI’s benefits equitably distributed.

Didn’t think this will be a reality so soon!
Faster adoption in fomo and for productivity gains without the thought of humans role in the loop is the start of the dooms days
If AI adoption numbers are even remotely true, we are going to see something I think we massively underestimate:
AI trance inside organisations.
Making AI work is becoming easy.
The act of noticing what happens to you when more and more of your thinking, validation and execution gets delegated to it
As tasks become longer and more autonomous, ownership starts fading. You know the output, but increasingly not the path that created it.
Thus validation, reflection and metacognition aren’t fancy terms anymore. They are becoming core skills of the AI era.
When 10–15% of the world starts using AI for the daily work or for their hardest problems.
The quest wouldn’t be :
How do I use AI better?
It will be :
How do I extract maximum leverage from AI without outsourcing parts of myself I never intended to lose?
There is no protocol for this yet.
The best way to learn AI is still to use it. Which also means we are running the experiment on ourselves while learning it.
AI skills are becoming things of the past as system and models improves
Prompting once a skill seen everywhere. Is now a skill of the past soon the same will be true for harness or context and for tools as we see this unprecedented growth of AI
The only skill will be knowing what should remain yours.
Software ate the world.
AI is eating software.
AI + robotics will eventually eat a lot of what remains.
We will move forward.
Try to come out of AI trance as early as possible
Stay aware enough to notice what we are gaining, what we are losing, and what we consciously choose to keep.
