Just posted on mskcc.org/news - incredibly moving story about the index patient in our recent study on chromothripsis-mediated small cell lung carcinoma. xitter.cf/natasharekhtman/status… Khaliq Sanda was a 19 yo premed student when he received the diagnosis. Our entire team was inspired by Khaliq to better understand his unusual disease and generate ideas for finding therapies. Thanks to @IanDemsky for interviewing with me, @charlesrudin and Khaliq's family, and for sharing his special story! mskcc.org/news/new-rare-type…
1 Hot off the press from team @MSKCancerCenter in @CD_AACR! A study solving the puzzle of exceptional new lung cancer type: #Chromothripsis-mediated Small Cell Lung Cancer #SCLC This took nearly a decade and 42 coauthors to unravel. Here are some highlights 👇 aacrjournals.org/cancerdisco…

Was lucky to join this team! A rare subgroup of SCLC originates from carcinoids. Surprisingly, their genomic hallmark was whole-chromosomal chromothripsis amplifying oncogenes. Thanks and congrats to my mentors and the leads @charlesrudin @natasharekhtman @SamTTweets @ChrisFebres

1/ Are you a cancer genomicist on the hunt for more genes with recurrent somatic mutations relevant to multiple cancer types? Allow me to introduce this work now at @NatMetabolism with @EdReznik @sloan_kettering and @mito_oncogene @CRUK_BI nature.com/articles/s42255-0…

By coincidence: exactly 6 years ago today, as Vice President of the USA, Joe Biden sent this note to his staff. I presume in the background, thoughts of his first wife & daughter who died long ago; or his son, who died of cancer just a few months after this note. Worth reading.

America, I’m honored that you have chosen me to lead our great country. The work ahead of us will be hard, but I promise you this: I will be a President for all Americans — whether you voted for me or not. I will keep the faith that you have placed in me.

Experts in genomics can instinctively look @ tumor sample seq results & infer tissue of origin eg EGFR amplification; EGFR ECD A289V mt -> GBM. Check out @MFBerger1 & @BarryTaylorLab formalization of this instinct via development of an algorithmic classifier.

My favorite papers challenge biomedical dogma. Here's my summary of the ones in 2018 that provided evidentiary shakeups.

Elegant @Cancer_Cell study by @BarryTaylorLab led by @CMBielski and Mark Donoghue, all of whom I'm fortunate to call colleagues & friends. "The zygosity of mutant oncogenes matters!": cell.com/cancer-cell/fulltex… BTW welcome to the twitterverse @BarryTaylorLab, you're one of us now!!

The Frederick lab has perfected disposal of used luminol-based ECL reagent. After the Western is developed, inject the ECL into a solution containing 10% bleach. Chemistry is awesome!
