This is a coevolutionary process: females evolve new preferences for male “autonomy-enhancing” traits b/c they benefit from the freedom to choose attractive mates; males evolve those traits (in spite of interfering w/ coercion) b/c there's a population of females that prefer them
New paper out in @journal_evo ! 🥳
Inspired by bowerbirds, we explore a new theoretical evolutionary possibility for sexual conflict: females may “remodel” males’ capacity to sexually coerce to expand their own freedom of mate choice @yale_eeb @IASToulouse doi.org/10.1093/evolut/qpad0…
Modeling framework featured in the paper infers mechanistic, temporal relationships among events. e.g., Do fights predict mating events? Do bad puns really elicit groans?? Open to collabs; if you have time-ordered relational event data, let's talk! :)
Attending #IOCongress2022? I'm excited to share with you my first-ever symposium talk on how new dynamic social network approaches reveal fighting isn't sexy in sage grouse! Tomorrow (Fri) ~ 8:20 in Symposium 10, Multimodality in Elaborate Displays; Live Q&A starting at ~10:10
Enjoying the great talks so far at #IOCongress2022 ! Very sad not to be able to see colleagues and beautiful Durban in person, but the virtual platform has made it easier to participate while spending time with the little one! 🥰
A warm thank you to everyone who made it to the talk today! For folx at #ISBE2022 who may have missed, there is a recorded version posted to the ISBE+ platform. Keep an eye out for the paper (hopefully) coming soon!
Interested in fancy birds, (non)aggression, social networks? Come check out my talk on how new dynamic social network approaches reveal fighting isn't sexy in sage grouse at #ISBE2022. Tomorrow (Tues) at 4:10PM in Room C3, sexual selection session
Made it to Stockholm with the whole fam including our 11-week-old baby for #ISBE2022 ! Looking forward to a great meeting!
On the plane to France to start my new research fellow position at @IASToulouse ! Now if only I can nail down a place to live, I’ll be all set!
