Given that the French-speaking world gave us the science of semiotics, they would be the first to recognise that the Palestine flag, as it is being hoisted and brandished across the French republic at the moment, has come to signify something far more than the aspirant state of Palestine.
You don't have to be Ferdinand de Saussure to appreciate that this signifier has become unmoored from its original meaning.
You don't have to be Roland Barthes to see that this emblem has now assumed a wholly mutated significance: in short, it has become an all-encompassing symbol to denote hatred of the West and of European civilisation.

An Algerian Hamas supporter who became an illegal overstayer in Britain, lied to immigration officers about it, and went to prison for it, is now in a senior role at the BBC.
Because the Tories and Labour failed to deport him.
Hicham Yezza has a long record of supporting Islamist violence.
He was arrested in 2008 for possessing an al-Qaeda terrorist training manual.
He came to Britain on a visa that expired in 2003. He stayed anyway. When immigration officers caught up with him, he told them his passport with the visa stamp had been stolen. They found it in his flat.
A jury convicted him of deception. He was jailed for nine months.
Then he won his appeal against deportation, and was later handed British citizenship.
Now he’s the Principal Data Scientist in the BBC’s “Responsible AI” division, helping to decide how AI shapes what BBC News tells you.
Before that he worked at BBC Monitoring, briefing BBC journalists on the Middle East.

A French woman says that the rioters and looters broke into her building and threatened her with rape while she was holding her child in her arms.
“That’s collateral damage” responds the feminist activist Bettina Zourli who holds a Master’s in gender studies and focuses her work on gender norms, motherhood, reproductive rights, and voluntary childlessness (“childfree”)
She describes herself as “feminist, childfree and Antifa”
Zourli also says that all the stores getting looted also constitute a case of collateral damage and that the revolution, which she supports, must be violent.
