New from me and @ColumbiaUEnergy on permitting reform timelines I wanted to understand how BAAJA could affect the time spent on permitting/construction for different energy projects compared to the status quo Can this bill help with timelines? Potentially a lot! A Deep dive👇

i'm sure other people have already tweeted this observation, BUT... ... does anyone actually need a car that can drive upside down?

Absolutely laughable for @climatebrad to claim @SenWhitehouse, of all legislators, has been corrupted because he’s negotiated a permitting reform bill that can actually pass. More on what bipartisan lawmaking requires here: revkin.substack.com/p/tracki…
The argument of the anti-BAAJA contingent is that Sheldon Whitehouse doesn’t care about climate change. It is not necessary to take these people seriously.

anyone noticed a lot fewer American anti-data center tweets after Ukraine blew up Russian datacenters?

I find @JaneAFlegal’s reaction to @RepHuffman compelling. Also just discussed lame duck vs waiting with @DanielPalken (see below)
I find this truly maddening. If Rep. Huffman thinks he can get a better deal, with fewer tradeoffs, that gets 60 votes and a Trump signature, great. Tell us what's in it and how you get there. "Wait and see" is *not* a plan.

This bill contains the most aggressive data center accountability measures in the country.
Yup. “The bipartisan legislation, unveiled last week, represents the most aggressive response yet from Washington to data centers amid growing backlash over their energy and environmental impacts.” axios.com/2026/10/08/data-ce…

BREAKING: Ukraine has just struck the NZNP Rostovsky oil products export terminal in Rostov-on-Don and set it ablaze, hours after the US-Russia diesel deal and Trump lifting sanctions on Russian fuel exports. This is a products export terminal, exactly where the diesel would leave Russia under the deal. Ukrainian military sources said earlier today that the Trump administration's attempt to use Russian diesel to lower US prices before the midterms "will bear no fruit."

My point is, don't make clean energy collateral damage to your insistence on blocking fossil projects. It's ok to be conflicted about *this* permitting reform bill. It's not ok to insist that the status quo is working.

A good example of how interconnection queues are holding up clean energy. We should encourage congress to pass a bill to address this!

so far the utilities and green groups' takes on the permitting bill is that they would prefer a bill that just included the parts of it they like

If you want to understand the big permitting reform bill working it's way forward in Congress, you'd have a hard time finding a better comprehensive conversation than this one. Give it a listen.
Today on Volts: the new federal permitting bill is 417 pages long. Some people love it, some hate it, some are confused. With @DanielPalken, I methodically walk through why it's happening, what exactly is in it, & the political rationale for doing it now. volts.wtf/p/whats-up-with-th…

Some climate folks are warning that BAAJA’s Title IV (the permitting certainty stuff) is a gift to fossil fuels. I’ve read the text closely, and while nothing is perfect and some concerns are worth taking seriously, many, especially about Sec. 1402, misrepresent the bill. 🧵

Which: of course. And also: that's clearly not how a bipartisan bill that passes with 60+ votes in the US Senate is gonna go down.

I too own a ton of data center stock. As does anyone who has a retirement account that is invested in broad-based index stocks. These companies' stock now underpins a majority of the American economy. This type of attack, rather than engaging on substance makes me very sad
Sheldon Whitehouse owning a ton of data center stock.... Huh, what else has he been in the news for lately? Oh, yeah, now the permitting "deal" makes a lot more sense!
