We’re building an AIxBio company. The hard part is the biology. The operating model we are striving towards is new - it is what this Replit post describes - a small team running development, BD, legal, finance, and ops through agents instead of building a full headcount for each. nitter.cf/amasad/status/20778022…

You say AI, they say SI, Iambic says both in their prospectus.

I cannot emphasize enough how much US management overstates the Chinese work ethic, 996 etc. I worked in Shanghai and HK for 4 years with the top semiconductor, biotech and tech cos and maybe true to some degree at the Foxconn, factory, fill finish facility - level, but China also has very strict labor protections that exceed even CA. On the flip side, we understate how lazy AF middle management and upper management is in the US.

Hi VC friends - if you’re touring China for a VC wrapped newco play, cool, but when in-licensing an asset, check chain of title first: map inventors’ prior jobs against company founding and patent dates, demand executed assignments plus lab notebooks showing independent work, and search filings under their names. Basic KYC on founders often reveals overlapping employment at a direct competitor.

25 years after the human genome, new drug targets are still scarce: Since 2000, 312 new targets have been added, an 84% increase, but that works out to only about 12–15 a year. Source: nature.com/articles/s41573-0…

33M patients today diagnosed with moderate-to-severe immune-mediated and inflammatory diseases in U.S., EU5, Canada, Japan. Only ~10% achieve remission. My company, CoFormBio, is targeting AI innovation for the >90% where the need remains.

“Quiet quitting” Be Bio, the B cell therapy startup which raised ~$300M across 3 rounds with $92M as recently as Jan ‘25, appears to have quietly shut down after failure in its hemophilia B lead program. Sad! hemob.org/resource-library/0…

”Rather than focusing on IQ or EQ, we call this metric the Outlier Quotient, or “OQ”. When forecasting founder success, it turns out that OQ was the single most predictive variable in our entire classification model, trained on ~70 different factors.”
After 15 years of investing, we realised that truly exceptional founders have something impossible to fake; deeply unconventional lives. We analysed 15,000 founders using five binary signals to measure this: quirky hobbies, early-life signs of exceptionalism, extreme life pivots, unusual geographies, non-linear careers. These sum to give a 0-5 score per founder. Whether someone started coding at age 10, speaks five languages, climbed Everest or quit a safe job to live in Chile, the signal we wanted was deviation from the mean. Rather than focusing on IQ or EQ, we call this metric the Outlier Quotient, or “OQ”. When forecasting founder success, it turns out that OQ was the single most predictive variable in our entire classification model, trained on ~70 different factors. Our OQ score had zero correlation with having worked at a top-tier company or attending an elite university. The signals most VCs rely on are noise without signal. The best founders don’t signal like everyone else, don’t think like everyone else and certainly don’t build like everyone else.

This could be a very promising one time gene therapy for Dravet which is a devasting disease and huge unmet need with potential broader application to generalizable and focal epilepsy among others. Go Encoded! businesswire.com/news/home/2…

Latest quarterly sales for Mounjaro and Ozempic was ~$24B. So TODAY, it is a $100B market. And this is excluding all the old GLP-1s for T2D. No Big Pharma will ever say NO to a $100B market. It may be a "no" now, but it can change

Left: Incumbent biotech. Process, committees, silos, legacy infrastructure.
Right: AI-native biotech. Agentic systems. Fewer people. Faster loops. First principles.
Same mission. Different architecture.
Few orgs move forward by subtraction. Those that do will own the future.

Two things early founders often get wrong, and should remember: 1) Building culture can feel like it's just fluff at the start. Until you start to raise capital or hire teams, and then you see how it shapes everything you do moving forward. 2) You should build a team so talented that it makes you slightly uncomfortable to be with them, because you know you are going to have to raise your game to keep up.
