I've had a response for 90% of the Upwork proposals I’ve sent over the last few months (as a beginner).
I’ve also won work charging 6x more than the other applicants.
Here’s why.
THREAD
Get great at networking if you can but if you’re just not?
Make friends with someone who is and introduce THEM to people.
Thank me later
Every copywriter wants to hitch their cart to a winning horse.
But you earn that right by working with a few donkeys first.
Me, hamfisting advertorials in my bedroom for 2 years, accidentally making $50M for a client
Should you put your price in the headline of your advertorial?
HELL YES.
But ONLY if the price is a feature/hook
If your product is somewhat expensive or a standard price don’t do it.
Build your world of desire and price anchor before you drop the price (if at all)
I’m shook
There are bachelor’s out there writing advertorials and fake review pages about themselves as partners to get dates with girls in their area
Game is game is game
Are we seriously still doing the fake 'live webinar' thing?
Got talked OUT of buying a $999 AI tool yesterday because of cringy fake audience interaction
If bro sent me straight to checkout he'd have my cash
Truth is power.
It attracts.
It transforms.
It purifies.
The challenge isn't finding truth.
It's separating it from the stories we tell ourselves.
Nothing weaker than a man who lies to himself.
The best writers I see on here focus on one thing:
Basics.
The legendary copywriters everyone studies:
Also basics.
Noticing a pattern…
In the biz world it’s a whole lotta nothing… and then a whole lotta something.
Gotta be Moses trekking through the desert to find the promised land
Magic: ‘The science and art of causing change to occur in conformity with the will.’
Building a business and changing your life is literally magic.
Did you really think it was going to be easy?
Your mechanism sucks.
It’s:
- Too complicated (must be kindergarten simple)
- Overused (must be novel)
- Unvalidated with evidence (proof is essential)
A solid, believable mechanism (of the problem and the solution) will transform your copy.
Don’t suffer from a mechanism that can’t pull its weight.
I can’t help but lose respect when I see you wearing an Apple watch
Clear sign of dopamine addiction and utter tastelessness (which is worse)
Nothing signals neediness and low value like smothering your copy in fake urgency.
'Only 24 hours left!'
'3 spots remaining!'
'Timer counting down!'
Real urgency is the weight of your customer's problem crushing them every single day.
That's what makes people buy.
No amount of copy tricks can hide your lack of give-a-damn.
The market is like your girlfriend—they know when you're faking it.
If you're gonna sell something, make it something that gets you amped up.
Do that and just watch yourself get rich.
Fuck saying you work in 'marketing'
Marketing: gen Z university degree chicks. Canva templates. Bubble tea. Brand guides. The new Jaguar ad.
Compare that to 'advertising'
David Ogilvy smoking a pipe. Martini lunches. Rolls Royce. Corner offices. Million dollar headlines.
Your market is drowning in:
•Professional copy
•Logical benefits
•Safe promises
•Normal marketing
Your customers are saturated with logic.
Maybe it's time to get weird
