The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “No one ever eats any food better than that which he has earned with his own hands”.
Yesterday i had a session with Fintech startups of cohort 3 of PesaTech Accelerator on investment readiness
Among the things we discussed when analyzing a Fintech startup for investment, are “Fintech Unit Economics” which are also important for a Fintech startup to track regularly
1. TPV/GMV - this shows potential for scale and market share
2. Take rate (a ratio of net revenue to your TPV) - this measures your pricing and revenue quality
3. CAC - Customer Acquisition Cost, measuring your cost of growth
4. LTV : CAC - This indicates whether your growth is meaningful and has value
5. Contribution margin - This measures your profit per transaction
6. Burn multiple - this tracks capital effeciency, for every 1 TZS you burn, how much revenue do you generate?. The lower the better
7. PAR30 - for lending Fintechs, this tracks bad debt and credity quality. If it exceeds 10% of the portfolio, then u have a problem.
Its amazing how people closest to you will be willing to give business to your competitor even when you can offer the same service or product way better.
Keep selling.
Yesterday i had a masterclass on “Wealth Creation, Growth, Protection, and Preservation, while looking at local and global investment trends” with the Heads of Departments and Team Leaders from Vodacom Tanzania, at Serena Hotel, DSM
Book a similar session for your team, financial wellness is a modern employment benefit.
Wealth isn’t necesarily built on a bigger salary or income. It’s built on what you do with the salary or income you already have.
Here are few tips,
1. If you are a business owner, pay yourself first and invest 10%-20% of the pay, if on salary, save 10%-20% a month
- Revenue feeds the business, profit feeds the family.
2. Build your safety net - get an emergency fund, insurance (takaful), start an investment club with friends
3. Don’t borrow to consume, its a fastest route to be poor
4. Invest small and steady - u dont need to be rich to start investing. It takes time, always compound
5. Protect what you build - diversify, write a will, set up a family trust.
Well-done Ghana

Attending the 8th FITSPA Annual Fintech Conference 2026 in Kampala, Uganda, as we explore setting up a branch for Shirkah / SSC here, executing our goal of operating in 5 markets across by 2030.
I had the opportunity to participate at the Five University Consortium Conference held at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology in Arusha.
I did a keynote presentation on “emerging funding models and strategies for climate financing and sustainability”
African debt crisis - not enough of a wake-up call?
The global debt has just hit $365T, equivalent to 310% of global GDP.
Between 1970 and 1987, Africa’s Debt to GDP ratio rose from 15.9% to 70%
African govts use 2x-3x more on debt financing than social services
Why not exploring enough other sources?
1. PPP - i wonder why this is not taking off
2. Public markets - issuance IPOs which would also deepen our markets. See Dangote
3. Blended finance instruments that can lower the cost of capital through credit enhancement
4. Build our own sovereign wealth funds that can invest in our strategic projects with flexible instruments amd cost.
5. Instruments that are structured for profit sharing based on the underlying asset
6. “Pay-for-results” structure that will optimize the financing cost
7. Despite huge climate financing gap in Africa, more than 40% of its financing is debt-based
One of the ways to address funding gap for early stage businesses in Tanzanai is angel investing.

To start a company or NGO for your career?
Some people when they gradute or wants to leave jobs, are faced with that dilema
Decision for NGO
1. Have a strong desire and mission for impact
2. Know your main source of income is grant and contributions (though this is changing now)
3. Dont expect to be rich, all the money that comes in is not yours (usiwe mpigaji)
4. Scaling an NGO is harder than scaling a company
Decision for a company
1. If you have strong entrepreneurial drive and desire
2. The money you make is yours
3. There is no ceiling to richness
4. You can quickly scale with the right product, market, and funding
Can you do both? YES.
A hybrid model
1. Start a social enterprise (NGO + Business combo)
2. Start a company with a side foundation
3. Start an NGO with a commercial arm
Most 'family business' structures in Tanzania are ticking time bombs.
No HoldCo, No family trust, no succession plan, one funeral away from collapse.
1. HoldCo - owns and operates active businesses through operating companies (OpCo) as subsidiaries
2. Family trust - owns the HoldCo, and owns other passive investments in financial markets
3. Succession plan - prepares the next on the line to take over
4. Systems and governance - protects the business continuity even after the founder's death.
Dont forget, only 3% of family businesses survives the 3rd to 4th generation.
