Seeing so many people be shocked by this tweet is a good reminder of how little basic knowledge people have about the AI safety situation
Jacob is correct here—we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to.

Charities are at the ❤️ of our communities across 🇬🇧 At Downing Street last week @Steph_Peacock & I heard directly from civil society leaders about how we can continue to work in partnership with the sector to understand the pressures they face.

Alasdair MacIntyre. RIP to a great moral philosopher, tireless intellect, dangerous wit & restless heart. Reading him changed my life (led to a dissertation & 1st book). Here's an old video I made on him: youtube.com/watch?v=NwuRgs4V…

A great light has gone out. He leaves us a profound legacy, and I pray now rests well in the peace of Christ.

The Charity Investment Governance Principles (CIGP) is now live. The CIGP supports best practices in decision-making around charity investments and has been developed by charities and investor experts for trustees and charity leaders. Take a look loom.ly/qU76UkQ

The chancellor’s autumn budget statement will seriously impact the charity and voluntary sector. We're urging chancellor @RachelReevesMP to protect charities from increased employer National Insurance Contributions. Add your name to our letter to the chancellor today. 👇👇

Higher NICs will be felt be people - mostly workers It will reduce work & increase the tax penalty on employment - that is now worse, meaning more moves to self-employment Since we link pension incentives to employer NICs, that incentive also goes up

How £26bn becomes £16bn. The net effect of employer NI increase is much less than appears because it results in lower pay and hence lower income tax and employee NI. In fact knock off another £6bn for compensating public sector employers and the net effect falls to just £10bn.
The employer NICs increase is scored as £25.7 bn on the scorecard. It was always going to be smaller in reality after accounting for knock-on effects. OBR sets that out - it's a £16 bn increase. Still big - just not £25 bn big.

In Red Book Gov commits to implement 'charity compliance measures' legislating to prevent abuse of charity tax rules by 2026. Claims it will save £35m by 2026/27. No details provided on what they are, so hard to evaluate. We would hope HMRC will provide further details and soon.

Real-terms public service funding growth of 1.5% per year after 2025/26 isn't particularly generous. That will leave some services with uncomfortably tight budgets. A short-term cash injection, with a promise of belt-tightening in future? I think I've heard that one before...
