'Ghost forests' could be key to understanding coastal resilience to climate change

Rising sea levels are contributing to a phenomenon called "ghost forests," which are groups of dead and dying standing trees that have been drowned by intruding saltwater. And all along the eastern...

The forest for the trees: Why mass planting doesn't always lock away soil carbon

Planting trees is widely championed as a straightforward, nature-based fix for global warming. The logic seems foolproof: expanding forests should pull more carbon dioxide from the air and pack it...

How forest structure alters heat signals

A new study shows that forest heat signals seen by thermal infrared sensors depend strongly on three-dimensional canopy structure, not just leaf or soil properties.
