Persons experiencing mummification
"Gosh, why are the mummy displays so dark and opaque? Must be the lights are broken. I should go tell them downstairs," I thought to myself while recently wandering around the Redpath Museum at McGill University. Then I read the sign. 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

The children are under strict orders not to fight in the car. The result is solemn promises to punch each other as soon as they get home.

NYT style is recommending tie-less suits with dress sneakers to disown the cons. Bleak.

We used to be a proper country
The Lincoln Memorial sits in land that was once in the Potomac. Not marshland but in the Potomac itself. The Army core of engineers at one point dredged the river and created some islands. The memorial itself rests on pillars sunk into the bedrock. Here are the concrete pillars that lie beneath and supports 38,000 tons of marble, granite, and limestone—sunk into the bedrock. About 110 of them. Going many feet below the visible floor.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA tried to tell us, but did we listen?
Maybe one trend that AI will reverse is the absolutely stupid practice of connecting things to the Internet that have no business being connected to the Internet.

I feel about this the same way that I do about foreign influence operations. They're spending all this money to mesmerize intellectuals and they never thought of inviting ME?
AI dudes run into trouble as soon as they encounter a person who isn’t mesmerized by expensive wine, power points, rich business guys in sneakers, and applies normal moral & epistemological standards to their pseudo philosophical gibberish.

A great opportunity. Also, apparently one of the few chances grad students will get to see @SWGoldman in the wild without a jacket.

Different objection: has the status of any modern intellectual/literary figure declined more sharply than Freud’s? Consisted one of the greats in the mid 20th C, now of almost solely historical interest.
The absence of Vergil, the greatest epic poem in the Western tradition, screams either a bottomless ignorance or something much worse.

A friend suggests Herbert Spencer as another example. I don’t think his influence was ever so pervasive as Freud’s. But maybe?

The existential question for the academic humanities is: why should the public (both individually and collectively) give us money to do this? They're the ones who get to decide on our future. And they will.
Increasingly, academics—particularly humanists—remind me of addicts who refuse to admit they have a problem: they’ve lost their spouse and kids, no one trusts them anymore, but they think everything would be fine if people just stopped spreading rumors about their bad behavior.

People read (or didn’t read) a lot of junk in the ‘50s. But we’re still dumber.
Before you panic about that Atlantic article on the end of reading, it’s worth considering what Horowitch is vaunting as our literary pinnacle. It ain’t what she shows. 👉 millersbookreview.com/p/befo…
