Thanks so much to @CIFAR_News for including me on this excellent panel on AI safety, governance, and Canada's future pathways and policy options.
Great to speak alongside Samir Chhabra (@ISED_CA), @TeresaScassa, and Foutse Khomh (@SWATLab), moderated by Dr. Elissa Strome.
A few takeaways:
➡️ Regulatory sandboxes in Canada could let us build more forward momentum on key AI areas while also helping us determine what sector-specific regulation (if
any) might be appropriate.
➡️ AI literacy and training is one of Canada's top challenges. It will need thoughtful federal and provincial coordination, especially since Ottawa doesn't hold many of the education and training levers.
➡️ The Canadian AI Safety Institute is running a decentralized model alongside our three AI research institutes, Amii, @VectorInst, and @Mila_Quebec, with some experts also working with colleagues at the NRC and the ISED AI secretariat. Curious to see how CAISI might build trust in AI and help bridge AI and technical talent across government.

ALT Five people stand smiling arm-in-arm in front of a presentation screen reading "CIFAR AI Frontiers School: AI Safety Edition, June 22–24, 2026." Left to right: Elissa Strome in a pink blazer, Jaxson Khan in a dark suit and purple tie, Samir Chhabra in a grey check blazer, Teresa Scassa in a patterned scarf, and Foutse Khomh in a white shirt. Several wear CIFAR lanyards.
