BREAKING: 4 Canadian Armed Forces members have died and 39 others are in hospital, including 19 in critical condition, following the deadly fire at CFB Wainwright.
Major-General Wade Rutland confirmed the casualty figures at a briefing Sunday. The fire swept through the base’s training area on Saturday, October 17, during military training.
The cause remains under investigation. Rutland said the fire spread with extraordinary speed after a sudden shift in wind, overwhelming soldiers in the area.
Maj.-Gen. Wade Rutland has confirmed that four Canadian Armed Forces members died and many others were injured in a rapidly spreading grass fire at CFB Wainwright on Saturday.
The fire ignited in the training area about 4 p.m. on Oct. 17 during a training activity involving soldiers from 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry.
Rutland said uncommonly strong winds caused the fire to spread quickly and shift toward the range administrative area. It crossed established fire guards before being contained with help from municipal authorities. The cause is under active investigation. He said it is not believed to involve oil and gas infrastructure or outside interference.
The four who died, as named by Rutland, are:
• Private Aidan Goulding, 3 PPCLI, North Vancouver, B.C.
• Private Shaun Farrell, 3 PPCLI, Prince Albert, Sask.
• Private Hayden Lykkemark, 3 PPCLI, Langley, B.C.
• Sergeant Morgan Wong, Loyal Edmonton Regiment, Edmonton, Alta.

Over $10 MILLION was actually paid out.
He even contacted the CRA beforehand to explain his bizarre beliefs about secret government accounts. The money still went through.
Here's the kicker. It wasn't the CRA that caught it. A BANK MANAGER raised the alarm and prevented another $30 million from being paid out.
CBC's The Fifth Estate uncovered 19 similar cases involving nearly $300 MILLION in claimed refunds.
No criminal charges against the man at the time of the report.
Meanwhile, ordinary Canadians face scrutiny over their tax returns. How does a federal agency responsible for collecting billions in taxes allow something like this to happen?
