Today I spoke about at NEU conference why the NEU should support a knowledge rich curriculum and that good quality textbooks help reduce workload.

NEW: The Welsh Government has admitted that it needs to clarify its guidance for schools on how to teach reading.
This is in response to an ITV News investigation which revealed that methods of teaching reading which have been discredited for decades are being used across Wales.
This is now becoming a national news story in Wales. Great to see primary school teachers like @garein and @robrandel being quoted as they have been advocating synthetic phonics for reading for years.

Primary school teacher @robrandel is spot on. Too many children in Wales are functionally illiterate and cannot access the secondary school curriculum because of poor reading skills. In primary, you learn to read. In secondary, you read to learn.

I thought the ref last night made the correct decision to disallow the Dutch goal against France. You can clearly see from this photo that it was the right decision.

Challenging and at times uncomfortable, but this is essential listening for anyone involved in education in Wales.
At what point do we have to look at a systemic synthetic phonics rollout? Originally a @UKLabour policy widely recognised to have improved reading in England.

Fantastic article in DT! 300 years ago, Catholic church on Warwick street was opened to Catholic Londoners by the Portuguese ambassador who were then at the time forbidden to worship on British soil. @BeardyHowse

Schools need to know that systematic synthetic phonics is used by multiple countries that see better PISA reading results than Wales.
Teachers deserve to know what works.
Every child deserves to read well, early, whether they come from advantage or not.

@AddysgEducation must listen to research evidence & provide better guidance for the teaching of reading in Wales.

A key factor is early reading instruction. Let's start by getting this right. Will @AddysgEducation and @WG_Education recognise that the first crucial step in solving this is the same as what was announced in Victoria, Australia, yesterday?

Our ambition is to ensure every child from any background can read fluently.
Studies show children learning by the phonics method are two years ahead of their peers.
We’ll put high quality phonics at heart of teaching children to read.

Trying to explain to my non- Catholic friends my utter excitement about having a letter published in the @The_Tablet about saving hundreds of pounds buying new lectionaries from India that Catholic schools will require from Advent 2024 has been somewhat challenging
Just had our new Lectionaries for school delivered from India. All for £113 with a Book of the Gospels chucked in. Saved hundreds of pounds. Quality top notch. @AndyLewis_RE @michael_merrick @chr1sCarlisle
All teachers in Wales need to read this well written article by @terrymac51 "The What Matters (WM) and the Descriptions of Learning (DL) of guidance are too wooly to be useful to teachers"
No one serious wants an English curriculum with its low-trust view of teacher agency but Wales has fast fallen into the Scottish and New Zealand trap - and we have to get out of that very quickly. ✍️@terrymac51

Education in Wales is suffering a funding crisis, PISA results are dire, lack of knowledge in the CFW and no mandatory Systematic synthetic phonics in primary. But let's argue about taking a week off the Summer holidays ⛱️ 🌞

I really hope LOS ANGELES wins the Derby at Epsom at 4.30 and fully expect this to happen. On the nose at 6/1.
Fantastic blog by @martinjohnes on the danger of the curriculum of Wales lacking historical content knowledge. I reposted it in 2019. It was written on the 100th anniversary of the 1919 South Wales race riots.
