Losing @sassycrass makes me think about how many Black women found community #onhere. Losing it is a natural, expected, deep sadness.
This one hurts. She was a major part of my Twitter experience from way back.

One of the questions I ask myself in my work as a brand strategist is “who’s asking for this ?”
Literally no one is asking for this.

All that fancy iron work people love in Charleston? Came from African iron working knowledge and skill. The rice coast came from Africans selected for their rice production knowledge. First inoculation in the US? Came from an enslaved African who brought that science with him.

This is a statement from two of the people who wrote Florida's new education standards on slavery. In it they give several names of people to exemplify slaves who learned skills they applied later in life.
Let's go through the supposed truth of this list one by one.
Want the truth on Florida’s African American History Standards? See statement below from experts who crafted them.
“Any attempt to reduce slaves to just victims of oppression fails to recognize their strength, courage and resiliency during a difficult time in American history.”

This list is supposedly of enslaved people who "developed ... trades from which they benefitted" but nearly all of these people were either never enslaved, or never held the jobs described on the list.

After July 4, 1776 it took United States Congress 148 years later to pass policy for Native people citizenship on our own lands. As we celebrate the historical Independence Day, remember we continue to fight & stand for tribal sovereignty for our children and grandchildren.

UNC & Harvard were both built & financed via the forced labor of enslaved Black people.
We need to move beyond narratives of “diversity” & Black people’s worthiness to be in white spaces.
“White” institutions/spaces are inherently racist. That’s how they became & remain white.
