No Ordinary Son - The Killing of Sydney & Jacqueline Blackwell
Why did a seventeen year-old, grade A student, choose to kill his parents? And what does it teach us about the development of narcissistic personality traits?
All 3 parts available from here. kerrydaynes.substack.com/p/n…
Our client @KerryDaynes has a Substack called The Darker Side of the Mind and it is well worth subscribing to.
I’m Kerry Daynes, a forensic psychologist, author, broadcaster, host of The Profiler podcast, and professional nosy parker.
For 30 years, I’ve worked around the darker edges of human behaviour: serious crime, offenders, victims, police investigations, deception, behavioural analysis and the criminal justice system.
On my Substack, I write about the things that fascinate me: true crime, forensic psychology, dark personalities, human nature and the stories behind the headlines.
Expect memoir, behind-the-scenes stories, The Profiler podcast notes, psychological deep dives, things I’ve learned from the people I work with, and the occasional rant when something requires an emergency cup of tea and a rapid debrief.
True crime without the serial-killer fan club. Psychology without the jargon. And plenty of questions/answers about why people do the things they do.
Please come and have a look around - kerrydaynes.substack.com

They made a film about the crash. Fair enough. It is a good scene.
The part I actually live with is quieter. A trolley in Jamaica. Visualisation I first learned in a helicopter.
Showing up for another winter when the world had already decided what the story was.
Ready Everyday is not a slogan for people who won. It is a standard for people who intend to still be here on Thursday.
SI lo ES. If it is not simple, inexpensive, effective and sustainable, I put it down.
Save the four words. Use them on the next thing you were about to buy for your “best self.”

I just popped over to @TalkTV to talk about the psychology of grandiose, narcissistic 'pathological lying' - with all this talk about Jason Arday, I can't help but think about other Walter Mittys in our midst.
With these types, there can be an underlying belief that the story SHOULD be true given how special they feel themselves to be, so the fabrication feels less like a lie and more like a correction of the 'unfair' gap between reality and what they deserve. Repeated telling can even make the story feel emotionally true to the person telling it, even though they are aware it isn't.
It is sad really, as it comes down to defending a fragile or inflated ego. But that is no defence against harmful porky pies.
And when used to bolster a career, targeting colleagues, press and institutions, just as Arday has found, truth will out!

I was born / taught from a young age about resilience. Didn’t drink a bottle of it, had it, taught it. It’s helped me massively over the years.
Having a sense of purpose is what keeps you going through hard times. They will pass!
Kids need to understand this ready for hard times which we all experience.
Preparation is key!
Just brilliant Ben or better still we think maybe @Nigel_Farage might like to contribute to it.
Can a billionaire gift me £5m. Or just a couple of quid to get this prosthetic. Please. Thank you.

This is me.
Few hours earlier I accepted death.
Leg gone, arm a mess, groin blown out, inside of my knee joint blown out. Metal sticking out my body.
After trying for a bit I accepted death. I was sad.
Before I was put to sleep I do remember thinking at least I faced my fears. Didn’t quit.
Not sure what they’d tell my parents but at least I knew I didn’t quit.
Same mentality now, different challenges. I’m a fighter! 🫡

Articles that are headlined 'Psychology Says ...' are invariably 🐮💩 and have no real psychological content whatever.

Are we now at a point that is beyond repair?
‘Whichever area you look at the system is broken’
New research has found that courts, prisons, police and probation services are failing to keep up with growing pressure and demand, with problems facing the criminal justice system still expected to worsen thejusticegap.com/criminal-j…
Busy day for @Jordon_Cox and I with an early start for @thismorning where Jordan was sharing his mother day deals and guess where we ended up
You are a massive inspiration Ben to so many people. You are to us as well.
17yrs ago today I was in Afghanistan as a young Royal Marine. I’d worked hard from 14/15 to get my green lid. Felt great. It also felt great getting to do my job, which includes war. I wasn’t scared.
One morning though I did wake up scared and had a voice that spoke bad news in my head. What can I do? So I left on foot to patrol and fight.
Few hours later I literally got blown up. Sat up and my leg was gone, arm in a bad way, hole in my other arm, inside of my knee blown out.
Nightmare!
I was put to sleep and woke up in the uk. At first I didn’t fancy being alive but over time I realised I could achieve a couple bits and bobs.
17yrs have passed and I’ve achieved a couple bits and bobs so I’m happy.
That’s what life’s all about. 🫡

It’ll be 17yrs on the 28th of this month.
It didn’t work out for me unfortunately. However, I’m grateful to have experienced some of my dreams. A good part of the dream was accomplished.
I’m grateful for that. 🫡

The truth. Laid bare.
Personally, my rateable VALUE jumps from £3k to £21k this year. (Despite all other local pubs remaining low).
In addition, my 75% rural relief drops to 40%.
I'll let you do the maths.
But they ain't math-ing my friends.
Reform rates. Now.
The UK could lose up to 9000 pubs.
From April, pubs with a rateable value of £100,000, will see business rates jump by £19,000 per year.
They will need to sell an additional:
60,000 pints a year.
Thats 1200 pints a week.
Thats 170 extra pints a day.
Thats before rising energy bills, wages and other costs.
