✨Some news ✨
Today is my first day as Data Editor at @PhillyInquirer! I started my career learning from Inquirer reporters and it’s a real thrill to join a news organization I’ve admired for so long. So excited!

Go birding. inquirer.com/news/bird-watch…
eBird data can help spot the effects of climate change. At the Jersey Shore, sightings of white ibis are up as warmer conditions make the area more hospitable. Sightings of the saltmarsh sparrow, black skimmer and piping plover are down, as sea level rise invades their nests
The story explicitly notes that all requests for comment during reporting were funneled back to the State Department, who did not reply.
Rubio bristled at questions about WSJ’s Guilfoyle story before departing Greece. “I’m not going to comment.” Video via @ralexdc
I found out this morning my daughter calls coffins "wooden vampire beds" and I think I'm going to let her hang onto that one for a while.
It appears this is being restored here, though not all the detail pages work yet:

Cheers, @njdotcom.
NJ.com has stopped supporting the Force Report, one of the most comprehensive, public databases of police use-of-force ever built.

As a member of this project, I'm going to work to get this data back online. What a damn shame though.
Proud to be at a news organization where reporters help set the rules for how AI is used.
🤖 No AI generated imagery/videos
🤖 No AI mimicking employees
🤖 Right to remove byline from any AI-content
🤖 A guild-staffed advisory committee

Cheers to @BriVannozziNJ and everyone at @NJSpotlightNews. This newscast always punched above its weight on shoestring support. They were a beacon in NJ.
It's a bittersweet day, but I hope the new era of public media in NJ can build on this legacy.

The NJ legislature is moving again and so are ceremonial bills. Hereby Designated continues to track weekly.
Here are the ceremonial bills moving through the legislature this week. NJ loves it some John Basilone

Winds have been howling at the coast. Tropical storm-force gusts from Delaware to Massachusetts. Peak of 74 mph in Surf City, NJ.
Tired: NJ.com, NJ's largest news organization, not sending any reporters to the Shore.
Wired: Joe's few-person team providing live updates, local data-viz/warnings and round the clock coverage across multiple platforms.
Belmar has reached major flood stage as high tide approaches along the Jersey Shore. Wind gusts have peaked at 74 mph. Stay safe out there.
The kerfuffle over drinking on Edison Place before/after Devils games has only resurfaced that a lot of fans are racist assholes still mad the team moved to Newark. A real bummer.
There was a commenter named "Horse" who only spoke in the third person as a horse and was the most sensible person on our platform.
For some reason I was just reminded of this. @njdotcom no longer has comments. But they did shortly before I left for Politico, and the bosses tried to juice engagement by having reporters jump into the discussions under our articles. It went about as well as you might expect.

Pete Genovese made it look like fun and games, but it was incredible professional journalism. Never took a freebie. Never wrote about a place without visiting and eating there. People have no idea what is being lost. youtube.com/watch?v=NMGmTMnW…
