This is Giorgio Chinaglia. Millennials have never heard of him, but he was one of the most extraordinary footballers that ever lived.
He was born in Carrara, Italy on January 24, 1947. His father moved the family from Tuscany to Cardiff for work. Giorgio signed for Swansea Town at 15 years old. There he was fined so often by the club that he had no money left for food, so he stole milk bottles from doorsteps for breakfast.
In 1966, at 19, Giorgio returned to Italy and signed for Massese in Serie C. After a spell with Internapoli, he joined Lazio in 1969. There he scored 140 goals in 263 appearances across all competitions and led Lazio to their first ever Serie A title in 1974. Their only one until 2000.
At the 1974 World Cup in Germany Italy played Haiti. Chinaglia played poorly and was substituted by manager Valcareggi. As he walked off he gave his coach the middle finger in front of 53,000 people and a global television audience. Back in the dressing room he smashed a couple of water bottles against the wall.
Italy were eliminated in the group stage and the whole country blamed Chinaglia. He never played for Italy again. After just 14 caps his career with the national team was over.
In 1976 he moved to New York Cosmos, where he played alongside Pelé and Franz Beckenbauer. There he would routinely tell Pele to his face that he was better than him. He scored a staggering 231 goals in 234 official matches, won four NASL titles and became the all-time top scorer in the history of the league.
In 1980 he scored 7 goals in a playoff game against the Tulsa Roughnecks. The co-owner of the Cosmos loved him so much he made him president of the club, while he was still playing.
In 1983 he returned to Italy and became president and majority shareholder of Lazio. There the trouble began. In 1986 Chinaglia was forced to sell his stake in the club because of financial problems. In 1996 a court handed him a two-year prison sentence for fraudulent bankruptcy tied to his management of the club's finances. Chinaglia had already moved back to the USA by that time and never came back to serve it.
At Lazio's centenary celebrations in 2000, fans voted him the greatest player in the club's history.
In 2004 he tried to buy US Foggia, but again there were money laundering allegations, so the acquisition failed and Chinaglia fled back to the USA once again.
When he tried to buy Lazio in 2006, Italian authorities started investigating money laundering connections to the Casalesi clan, one of the Camorra's most feared crime families. A warrant for Chinaglia's arrest was issued and he was fined €4.2 million. A second arrest warrant followed in 2008. He never returned to Italy.
Giorgio Chinaglia died on April 1, 2012 in Naples, Florida. Aged 65. His body was brought back to Rome and buried in the Maestrelli family chapel, alongside the coach who gave him his greatest years at Lazio.
