I think many of us working in tech tend to forget that the reason software engineering vs other engineering fields pays (a lot!) more, is a lot more flexible (WFH/remote), and has better perks: Because this field changes much faster than other engineering fields. The premium is because fewer people are able/willing to pick up new technologies, methodologies so quickly. But the field had ~10-20 years of stability, and so lots of folks forgot this is why a premium exists. And that AI is just another tech wave: software engineers who pick it up and master it will generally fare better; those not will struggle a lot more.

I'm a few hundred puzzles into Order of the Sinking Star, and it is, indeed, fantastic. Yes, it's a box pushing game, but it plans to be the LAST box pushing game. No meat will be left on the bones. The puzzles are really well put together. Compact. No extra elements. You are given a seemingly impossible situation and you have to explore the capabilities of the few parts you are given and figure out a new way to use them. Really ingenious stuff in here. Highly recommended. I've already gotten well over the $30 worth, and I have a LONG way to go.

Fantasy computer security problems: "Maybe by sending packets and detecting the timing of the vibrations of the computer case, it is possible for an attacker to gain information about the private key." Real computer security problems: "The private key was 4. Not 4 digits. 4."
‼️ BREAKING: The private keys of 8 certificates from Indian certificate authority eMudhra were compromised, Mozilla says. Firefox blocked them within 3 hours. Each key should be a 116-digit number, but one was just 4. Anyone can guess them and forge HTTPS certs for any website.

I'm starting to see any user interface for data entry as obsolete. And any missing visualization of the data entered/available/stored as a missing feature. Is there a real designer out there who spent valuable time figuring out what a service or app should be? I haven't seen or read anything valuable yet. Context: agents (personal or not)

A middleware engineer in South Korea wrote to me, seeking help on what to do now that their manager is "blinded by GenAI hype" and set an "AI token usage" KPI. This eng is using v little AI, so manager is poking them to use more. My response: your manager is trying to help you

Freemium games that enable ad watches or ~unlimited spending should be Considered Harmful. The behavior here is still unusually vile, and sufficiently blatant that I ~knew from watching on subway rides that the supposedly random pieces aren't random. But this? My lord.

37,2. Via: tiktok.com/@Ansenjeo

PSA: if you ever used API keys in @opencode you may want to monitor or revoke those keys immediately. Seems a legacy system was hacked overnight. I saw my Open AI, Anthropic, and Google AI spend alerts all fire off before going to bed wondering what was going on. Though only Google went ahead and suspended the project for suspicious activity.
