Pasó una pandemia, una defensa de disertación y graduación virtual por la suspensión de clases, y casi 2 años para que con quienes compartimos varios años de camino nos volviéramos a encontrar en persona y poder festejar. #PhDHoodingCeremony @USCDornsife 🇺🇸 #LosAngeles – at Los Angeles, CA

One of those 'twitterless others' is my @SPECLabUSC co-PI Jonathan Markowitz! He and Andrew Coe, in "Crude Calculations," look at the relationship between innovation, productivity, & the profitability of conquest. Political economy of security folks on #PoliSciTwitter, take note!

Reviewing my slides for tomorrow's #APSA2021 presentation on mentorship at @SPECLabUSC and realized that the first time I presented on this was five years ago. The lab was a year old. Where does time go???

One for the political economy of security folks! Markowitz (@SPECLabUSC) and Coe show how productivity and innovation reduce the net profits of conquest using an innovative analysis of counterfactuals in the Persian Gulf. #PoliSciTwitter
Does conquest pay? Markowitz (@uscpoir) and Coe (@VandyPoliSci) argue that opportunity costs have been ignored in previous answers to this question. While conquering the Persian Gulf would have paid for Saddam Hussein, it would not for the U.S. cambridge.org/core/journals/…

This is an excellent resource for scholars in quant IR. AND it incorporates new data on estimated GDP, population, and surplus domestic product over large swaths of time, courtesy of @SPECLabUSC affiliates @thereanders @cjfariss and Jonathan Markowitz. #PoliSciTwitter
{peacesciencer} now has a user guide. Ideally I would love to publish this but I also don't know who would be interested (i.e. it's basically an #rstats tutorial that I'd love to feature in an IR journal). Feedback welcome. github.com/svmiller/peacesci…
