Through an accident of birth, Micheál Martin enjoys the freedom won by generations across Ireland
Yet for decades, he has told citizens in one corner that his freedom is not for them
History will judge him harshly
If the approach to the failed talks to resolve Drumcree had been followed by those who negotiated the Good Friday Agreement, “nothing” would have been agreed, the Taoiseach has said. belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/…

This was Lockharts constituency, one of her constituents, a young Catholic mother under sectarian attack by 2 loyalists. She never raised it in the House Of Commons, with the CC, said absolutely nothing...🙄

Unionism's former leader - the most self-rightous of them - has been jailed for child rape. Of course they're going to throw dead cats on the table. Cynical. Disgusting. Sin é.

The only guns on the street in the last few weeks were the UDAs in Coleraine. The DUP and UUP said nothing.
DUP leader Gavin Robinson has called for the “full picture” over any potential threats to police officers or Orangemen, which could have contributed to the decision to ban the Drumcree parade, to be made known.

The DUP has displayed considerably more indignant passion about a single act of civil disobedience on the Garvaghy Road than it has about three decades of post-GFA murder, extortion, human trafficking and drug-dealing by the UVF/UDA. The same UDA/UVF that provided the muscle

Can we expect Carla and the DUP to take the same line with PSNI risk assessments on loyalist paramilitaries? Riots, bonfires, paramilitary flags, have been left in place due to loyalist paramilitary threats. The garvaghy road protest was entirely peaceful.

The characterisation of the large numbers of people - from diverse backgrounds - who exercised their human rights to protest peacefully and to free expression - in relation to the Garvaghy Road - remains highly problematic.
A pause for reflection may be wise.

The Parades Commission met the UVF/UDA to discuss the Garvaghy parade. Both organisations are active, armed and engaged in a wide range of criminality, from murder to trafficking; from extortion to ethnic cleansing.

Absolute state of this.
The umbrella outfit representing still active, illegal loyalist paramilitaries actually met the Parades Commission to lobby for the Drumcree parade.
The media framing is to deflect from sectarian conduct of loyalists in applying to parade there at all.

I really enjoyed this book. Discussion of key principles, cleverly woven into family history.
What kind of united Ireland do we want to build?
Caoilfhionn Ní Dhonnabháin’s new book puts equality, solidarity and the public good at the heart of that debate. A hopeful challenge to think beyond the limits of the Ireland we know.

Utterly despicable desecration of the Ormeau Rd Bookmakers Memorial. This comes five weeks after the last attack, which was in the context of the Orange Order seeking to march along the Garvaghy Rd. (The families have yet to hear from the PSNI regarding that last attack.) This latest attack comes as the Apprentice Boys now seek to walk the Ormeau Rd. Our thoughts are with the distraught families and injured who are left to pick up the pieces of this trauma. In this small beleaguered community of a handful of streets over 73 people have lost their lives to the conflict, the overwhelming majority in sectarian attacks involving state agents and collusion.
