Thus, once it was known to be possible, many people attempted to grind out a 15.59, to share in the glory of having the fastest possible time on one of the shortest ILs in the game. Some people burned out of the process, and some got the glory of the shared gold.

Research is still ongoing as to why this can happen. The current theory is that because SGT starts when the load is finished, but is decoupled from render, the "first frame" could be longer or shorter, causing the timer variance.

Based on that in game timer, also called Shine Get Timer (SGT for short), Weegee got potentially the first 15.59. What causes this discrepancy between real time and SGT, and how did he save this extra centisecond?

In order to make timing easier for IL competitors, an action replay code was developed to use the built in timer (seen on levels like red button secrets, or Piantissimo races), in every level. It starts once the game fully loads, and ends once the shine get cutscene starts.

However, this results in a "real time" of 15.60. The previous world record, first obtained by Weegee, was a 15.59. This was measured, not by "real time", but by utilizing an in game timer. How does that work?

On September 14th, 2022, Super Mario Sunshine Speedrunning history was made. Runner @Hansel_Panda broke one of the biggest ties (and one of the biggest memes) in Individual Level (IL) running by getting this run of Beach Pipe in 15.58. (Speedrunning 🧵!)
