Most people who know the Battle of Mogadishu remember two names: Gary Gordon and Randy Shughart, the Delta Force operators who made their last stand at the crash site. The movie Black Hawk Down made them household names.
Almost no one talks about the third Delta Force sniper who was on that same helo. His name is Brad Halling.
On October 3, 1993 he was flying sniper cover over Mogadishu in the Black Hawk Super 62. When Super 64 went down, Gordon and Shughart asked three times to be inserted. Halling was ready to go with them. Then the crew chief took a round through the hands and the minigun went silent. Halling treated him, handed over his rifle, and stayed on the gun. He watched his teammates fast-rope out. He never thought it would be the last time he saw them.
While they were covering Gordon and Shughart on the ground, an RPG came up through the floor of Super 62, through Halling’s left leg, and into the engine. He used a belt and a screwdriver as a tourniquet and kept working the gun. When they got back, doctors told him the leg would probably have to come off above the knee. At the time, that usually meant the end of an Army career.
Halling refused to accept that. He fought the medical board all the way to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, who personally intervened. Halling became the first above the knee amputee to remain on active duty through a full career. He retired in 2000 as a Sergeant Major.
He didn’t disappear. He earned a graduate certificate in prosthetics at the University of Connecticut and was working in a clinic on Long Island when the towers fell on 9/11. He went back to Fort Bragg as a civilian instructor and spent years training the next generation of special operators. He still runs on October 3rd. He has said it plainly: he runs because those guys didn’t come home. They can’t run.
In 2019 he and his wife founded BHAWK, Brad Halling American Whiskey Company, in Southern Pines, North Carolina. The name is a nod to the Black Hawks of that day. The first gratitude batch is dedicated to the pilots and crew of Super 62.
Respect.
