In Italy, Ferragosto is an ancient tradition rooted in Emperor Augustusโs Feriae Augusti.
The name "Feriae Augusti" in Latin literally means "Augustus's holidays". The Emperor created this festival in 18 BC to give workers a well-deserved rest after the hard harvest season.
He named the holidays after himself to boost his popularity, and this ancient tradition eventually turned into modern Ferragosto
With the spread of Christianity, the popular celebration of Ferragosto was progressively associated with the solemnity of the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, celebrated on August 15th. This religious feast is the reason why today is a public holiday in most Catholic countries.
