In AI performance, most of the optimization effort goes to the model. But in a real product, the model is surrounded by supporting code that runs alongside it on every frame – often left exactly as it was first written, with inefficiencies that can slow the whole system down, use excessive compute, and drive up costs.
We saw this in an open-source LiDAR perception pipeline running on @nvidia Thor hardware. Three custom CUDA kernels accounted for ~20% of GPU kernel time.
