Good question. For me it was a room with lots of power outlets and a dozen ethernet outlets. The big white curved table I got for $100. There are lots of these for sale on the Facebook Marketplace, sometimes free. I knew I wanted big screens. And I knew I wanted everything to be 4K. I'm not sure what you already have, radio-wise. One computer and one SDR unit, either from Nooelec or SDRplay make for a good start. You can do so much with an SDR. I started at the kitchen table with a coax feed out the window to a small antenna on a painter's pole for aircraft tracking and old TV rabbit ears for weather satellite images.

Are you active on the lower bands, including medium wave, 80m and perhaps even 40m? How about getting involved in some citizen science experiments during the solar eclipse next week?
The RSGB Propagation Studies Committee would like your help with some #amateurradio experiments on Wednesday 12 August 2026. Let's see how the Sun’s ultraviolet and X-ray output affects our ionosphere and how radio waves are propagated.

Right now 80m has several active WRTC stations. The 50 teams are competing from UK with calls mBxx. You can hear them on the Bedfordshire nRSP- sdrplay.com/try-accessing-an… using your phone browser or better still why not work them on HF.
