It’s welcome to see amendments to the Holiday Meal Payments Bill voted down at Stormont. We don’t want to see any delay in the start of holiday payments to struggling families.
Campaigners have accused the education minister of attempting to undermine a proposed Stormont law which would help poorer families with the cost of food.

We're very concerned about amendments to the Holiday Hunger Bill tabled at the last minute that would mean parents & children would have no guarantees about when, if ever, payments might begin. Read our joint press release adviceni.net/about/news/fami… #EndHolidayHunger #HolidayHunger
It didn’t make headlines but this week Stormont's Department for Communities provided an update on the Anti-Poverty Strategy. They said the Minister is committed to creating a more ambitious strategy. Along with many others we've long been calling for leadership on child poverty:

Unfortunately, some children in Northern Ireland will still be the "odd ones" as free schools meals are NOT being expanded in Northern Ireland leaving families here even further behind after the loss of the Holiday Hunger payments during the summer months ⬇️

This announcement reflects legitimate concerns about children's safety online, but a ban of this scale would change how children access and experience the digital world. The UK Government must ensure that any decisions are informed by children themselves and by independent experts.
We are concerned that a blanket ban may look protective on paper, but instead pushes children into less regulated spaces, where they are less likely to seek help when something goes wrong. Children growing up in poverty are likely to be among those most affected.
If ministers want to make the online world safer, the answer is not simply keeping children off platforms. The focus must be on providing better support for parents by making platforms safer by design, tackling addictive and high-risk features such as stranger contact, live streaming, nudification tools and unsafe AI systems, so that children are not exposed to harm online.

Our hearts are heavy for those impacted by last night’s violence.
We urgently call for calm. Children’s safety must be put first.
No child should have to flee home terrified for their family’s safety. No child should fear playing on the street or going to their youth club. No young person should be lured into violence by those with divisive agendas.
In this part of the world we know too well where violence leads; it scars childhoods, pits communities against each other and leaves a legacy of disadvantage and trauma for the next generation.
Together we must ensure every child gets to live in peace and safety.

Tragically we say it again - no child should be exploited through fear and hate for violent ends. No community should have to cower in fear of violence.

It's good news that @danielbakersf private member's bill to reinstate school holiday payments has passed second stage in the NIA. I only got to catch bit of the debate. I agree with @NickDMathison in respect of the thousands of children in poverty who are not entitled to FSM.
Much focus at Stormont today on under pressure families & soaring living costs. 3 yrs since holiday hunger payments were axed MLAs debate a Private Members' Bill from @danielbakersf to see them reinstated. Currently children here are treated unequally compared to rest of UK &Ire.
Latest child poverty stats didn't get pick-up in NI media last wk but we want to keep sharing about impact on the children behind the data. There's a story of widening inequality in terms of support offered to families here. We can't be silent on this! savethechildren.org.uk/news/…
