Today's straw poll with colour-coded ballots will be different than for Ban in '06 & Guterres in '16. In those cases, members believed they had a winner & coloured ballots were just to confirm. Today there's sense of a blockage & coloured ballots may help to see where that lies.
#RaceforUNSecretaryGeneral 6th straw poll of the UNSC on SG Selection will be held Friday 3.30pmET

Security Council Joint Pledgers on Climate, Peace and Security – Haiti October 2026 🎙️Media Stakeout We, the Security Council signatories of the Joint Pledges on Climate, Peace, and Security – Colombia, Denmark, France, Latvia, Liberia, Panama, the United Kingdom and my own country, Greece – take this opportunity, ahead of the Security Council meeting on the UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), to reaffirm our collective call to address the country’s interlinked climate change, peace and security challenges. Haiti’s crisis shows that climate, peace and security are inseparable: natural resources management, climate shocks, environmental degradation, on one hand, and gang violence, on the other, are reinforcing each other and deepening displacement, hunger, and instability. Highly vulnerable to disasters with 96% of its population facing exposure to climate-related risks such as hurricanes, coastal erosion, and rising temperatures, Haiti illustrates the CPS nexus at its most acute, compounded by its exposure to other natural hazards, including earthquakes. Against this backdrop, we highlight four key messages: First, robust governance and oversight of natural resources are essential. Illicit exploitation is weakening state authority and depriving Haiti of revenues and public funds. We note the importance of strengthening domestic regulatory frameworks, including through relevant international instruments such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flor (CITES), to promote sustainable resource management and strengthen resilience and governance. Second, climate vulnerability is not a background issue in Haiti; it is part of the conflict environment. Deteriorating economic conditions, environmental degradation and land-use issues have eroded local coping capacities, while flooding, drought, and landslides intensify displacement and social tensions, especially where state presence is weak. This makes climate adaptation a conflict prevention tool, not just a development issue. Third, gang violence is directly undermining climate resilience and state recovery. As of today, gang violence had displaced almost 1.5 million people, while an estimated 70% of Port-au-Prince is under gang control. BINUH, UNSOH & the GSF should be aligned around disaster risk reduction, climate adaption, civilian protection, humanitarian access, and stabilization of key corridors so that climate shocks do not trigger further displacement and local conflict. Finally, Haiti needs a joined-up CPS response built around prevention, resilience and sustainable development. Climate-security challenges must be linked to livelihoods, social cohesion, and prevention; not treated as separate tracks. The Haiti Climate Security Group, created in 2022, is a useful platform for integrating climate-risk analysis into peacebuilding and political engagement, and should be linked more closely to Council attention and field-level planning. Further, we welcome Haiti’s recent efforts to strengthen environmental governance, ecological rehabilitation and climate finance following April’s round table with UN entities and other partners. The response should prioritize watershed management, climate-smart agriculture and climate-resilient livelihoods and infrastructures, support for host communities and displaced people in high-risk areas, as well as mobilizing the necessary resources for the implementation of these efforts. Consequently, we recommend: sustained Council engagement on CPS in Haiti; predictable support to BINUH, UNSOH & the GSF; targeted investments in climate resilience, natural resources management, displacement-sensitive protection, and conflict prevention led by Haitians themselves. 🇨🇴 🇩🇰 🇫🇷 🇱🇻 🇱🇷 🇵🇦 🇬🇧 🇬🇷

🚨 Due to funding shortages, WFP is forced to reduce food assistance in Gaza by around one-third, meaning half a million people will lose access to critical aid. The cuts come as winter approaches and the recent modest improvements in food security remain fragile. From this month, we are supporting 1.1 million of the most vulnerable people in Gaza with food and cash assistance, down from 1.6 million last month. Food rations will also be cut by half. WFP urgently calls for additional funding in order to keep reaching the most vulnerable in Gaza and the West Bank.

In addition to eliminating access for local runners (like me) who frequent East Potomac Park, this would remove significant portions of the Marine Corps Marathon, Cherry Blossom 10 Miler, DC Half & other races that draw tens of thousands of people from all over the world.
Looks like what runners and cyclists feared could come true: Trump’s plans for a new golf course at East Potomac Park seem to eliminate the existing three-mile roads that circles the island. It’s a popular destination for running, riding, and driving access to Hains Point.

The supposed plan for East Potomac Park is an absolute tragedy for so many that call our nation’s capital home. For 130 years, East Potomac has served every kind of American. Golfers, cyclists, runners, birdwatchers, walkers, picnickers, anyone who just wants to see the cherry blossoms. This plan is a betrayal of the public, of the National Park Service, and of the very act that established this land to be “forever held and used as a park for the recreation and pleasure of the people.” Ask yourself who a public muni golf course is actually meant to serve. East Potomac was built in direct response to the elitism of golf, a course anyone could walk onto and play, at a time when golf in America belonged almost entirely to the wealthy. Now the government wants to turn it back into exactly that. The very thing this course was built to stand against. This golf escapade is compounded by the fact that golf is about to become the only purpose of this entire peninsula. Over 130 years, East Potomac expanded, not narrowed, who and what it served. The road came. The playground came. The mini golf course came. The cherry blossoms were planted and became part of the city’s identity. All of it added, piece by piece, to widen who this park belonged to. Now it’s all being wiped out in one fell swoop, for a single use, by a single man. Donald Trump already owns 16 golf courses. He doesn’t need a 17th. Especially not one carved out of 130 years of public land to chase his own personal trophy. The heart of this issue really is not about golf. It is about who owns our public lands in America. The National Park Service’s mandate is "...to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wildlife therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations." Not for the enjoyment of one man’s ego. For future generations. Public land doesn’t become private property just because the person in office wants it to be. That’s the whole point of calling it public.

This design appears to completely eliminate the much-beloved loop road and public park at Hains Point, and cut down the cherry trees which line the road. The park is a public space used by tens of thousands of Washingtonians and heavily visited by tourists. /photos not my own.

This was Panama’s last work luncheon as E10 Coordinator for October in the Security Council. These are important spaces for Political Coordinators to set the agenda between E10 Permanent Representatives and the Secretary General, discussing pending matters like working methods and subsidiary bodies and to share with each others in which files we must work together as a group. This time we invited the Incoming Members (I5) and shared with them, passed the baton on several issues and getting them ready to assume their term starting 2 Jan 2027. It is an honor for Panama to host and to facilitate these spaces with the PC family.

My thoughts about geographical rotation in the SG Selection process: It’s Latin America and the Caribbean’s turn. Thank you, @devex for publishing it ahead of the color-coded straw poll which will be held by the Security Council tomorrow: “The credibility of the United Nations rests not only on its ability to deliver results, but also on its commitment to the principles, rules, and precedents that govern its work. The selection of its next secretary-general will be a critical test of that commitment.  After five rounds of straw polls, the U.N. Security Council has yet to identify a consensus or compromise candidate. While member states remain cautious about revealing their positions, the continued use of undifferentiated ballots — which means member votes are anonymous — has left the council unable to determine whether leading candidates face opposition from the five veto-wielding permanent members.  Shortly before the council meets again on Oct. 16, this time for color-coded (differentiated) ballots that determine the permanent members’ negative votes, it is crucial that the wider U.N. General Assembly membership expresses its support to qualified candidates from the Latin America and the Caribbean region.” devex.com/news/un-secretary-… #Devex via @Devex
