Somewhere along the way, I believe many coaches have forgotten that mistakes are supposed to be part of development.
A kid turns the ball over….bench.
Misses an assignment…..bench.
Makes the wrong read……yelling, running, or some other immediate punishment.
Then we wonder why athletes play scared, hesitate, hide from big moments, and constantly look toward the sideline or their parents after every mistake.
Accountability matters. Effort, attitude, and repeated carelessness should have consequences. But every mistake is not disobedience, laziness, or a character flaw. Sometimes a young athlete is simply learning.
If we punish every mistake before we teach through it, we are not developing confident decision-makers. We are developing athletes who become experts at avoiding blame.
Give kids room to fail, process, adjust, and try again.
That is not lowering the standard.
That is coaching.

yesterday, i hosted a free one day, NBA Combine-style, Pro Day for any and every high school basketball player that wanted to join. and our beautiful young people came out to dance! i wanted to do something that first, glorified God, and second, allowed our young people to freely display their art.
first of all the numbers were crazy— to all developers; samantha stukes, bob jones, jermaine jefferson, anthony white, jenzel nash, rian narra, randy clark, rob godinez, ronny weihmann, matt flores, and many more, you guys are geniuses! the athletes you all work with are incredible, never stop impacting lives!
i am eternally grateful to every family & every athlete. thank you for coming out, showing out, and supporting these young people. i can’t put in words how thankful i am to every hand that helped in anyway. young stars, have fun, be free, & have a YEAR! i can’t wait for the next one. 🫂

Prince Reeves finishes the half with 17 points. He has been a big reason why his team is only down 3 at half. He is an aggressive player downhill and will go through contact to draw fouls.
