The two main reasons why athletes underperform under pressure: 1. Lack of preparation 2. Poor mental game With smart training and mental skills, athletes can overcome nervousness and perform better under pressure.

As a coach, don’t just recruit the most talented athletes. Recruit talented athletes who also have great character, toughness, and leadership.

Average athletes only train how they like to. Great athletes train how they need to!

Elite players… respond to failure differently. They don't let one mistake become two. They learn from it, let it go, and get ready for the next pitch, the next play, or the next opportunity. #elitesoftball #fastpitchsoftball #thedotrichardsonshow

The easy gives you comfort now and consequences later. The hard costs you now but builds the character you will need later. Your standard is not what you choose when the decision is easy. It is what you refuse to compromise when it is not.

Kids don’t want things to be easier. They want structure, clear routines, clear expectations, and consistent follow-through. But, structure without relationship is just control. High standards only work when we pair them with high support. Demand more. Teach more. Care more.

What do elite players do differently? People often ask me what separates good players from elite players. It isn't just talent. Talent may get you noticed, but it won't sustain excellence. Over the years, as a player and a coach, I've found that elite players consistently develop these five habits: 🥎 They stay coachable. Elite players don't think they know it all. They welcome feedback, ask questions, and are always looking for ways to improve. 🥎 They master the fundamentals. They don't chase the flashy plays—they commit to doing the simple things exceptionally well. Under pressure, they trust the fundamentals they've practiced thousands of times. 🥎 They prepare long before game day. Confidence doesn't come from hoping you'll play well. It comes from the work you put in when no one is watching—practice, conditioning, film study, and preparation. 🥎 They control what they can control. They can't control the umpire, the weather, or a bad bounce. But they can control their attitude, effort, focus, and response. That's where champions live. 🥎 They make everyone around them better. True greatness isn't measured only by statistics. Elite players encourage teammates, lead by example, communicate well, and put the success of the team above themselves. These habits don't just create better athletes—they build stronger leaders, better teammates, and people of character. Over the next few weeks, we'll take a look at several more characteristics of elite players and what sets them apart. Because becoming elite isn't about one big moment. It's about making the right choices every single day. #eliteathletes #fastpitchsoftball #thedotrichardsonshow

🥎 SUMMER WORKOUTS AREN’T OPTIONAL. THEY’RE YOUR TRYOUT. One of the biggest misconceptions I hear from recruits is: “I committed… now I can relax until college.” The truth? Your first impression starts long before your first game. College coaches expect incoming freshmen to arrive stronger, faster, and ready to compete from Day 1. Every workout you skip this summer puts you further behind teammates who are preparing to earn playing time. If your goal is to be an impact player as a freshman, summer training isn’t optional. This is the time to: 💪 Build strength and power. 🏃 Improve your speed and conditioning. 🥎 Refine your skills. 🧠 Prepare mentally for the pace of the college game. Remember, every player on that roster was one of the best on their high school team. Talent alone won’t separate you anymore. The freshmen who earn opportunities early are usually the ones who show up prepared—not just talented. Don’t spend the summer celebrating your commitment. Spend it preparing to earn your spot. — Coach Jennifer Turner
