BUILDING FIGHT Each workout is a chance to build a specific development environment specific to a players needs. The best development coaches are experts at building these environments. Sometimes tho, the player builds it for you. When they aren’t performing (making shots) at a high level, don’t bring energy, lack focus … it is a chance for the coach to hold them accountable - and more importantly for the player to learn how to ‘bounce back’ and right the ship. If you think your players are always going to bring energy, be focused, play with max effort, you are kidding yourself. Having the standard, holding them accountable to the standard, and pushing them to limit bad days/games/halves/possessions is key!

Finishing isn’t about one move. It’s about having solutions. Different angles. Different footwork. Different body positions. The more solutions you develop, the harder you are to stop. A great way to do this is by slowing down in training and focus on reading defenders to find space to finish through contact or length. What’s harder to finish - over length or thru contact?

PASSION OVER TALENT Coaches understand that you need talent to win. They also know that players that ‘care’ and have passion about what they are doing will impact winning more consistently than players that don’t. This translates to development, as we are forced to figure out how to create environments where players need to be engaged, competitive, and care!

Most players don’t struggle in ball screens because of the screen. They struggle because they’re in a hurry. ✅ Slow down ✅ Set up the defender ✅ Use the screen to create space The best players aren’t rushing the action—they’re controlling it. What’s the biggest mistake you see players make in ball screens?

1v1 Finishing Simple live finishing drill we use with our players that can benefit from better vision and solutions around the rim. Defense touches lateral or back, ball handler attacks and finds solution at the rim

WASTING TIME, TALENT, OPPORTUNITY One of the benefits of developing High Level Professional and College Players, while also coaching my kids in youth sports is seeing the full spectrum of where players and parents can be more efficient and overachieve. Here are Threes areas I consistently see that players can be less wasteful… 1. Time - The amount of time wasted by youth players that play an inordinate amount of games (I’m not saying don’t play at all) is rampant. They could spend 15 minutes a day at home with intentional practice on shooting form, finishing solutions, ball handling, etc. and become exponentially better. 2. Talent - As players get older, Many players with talent that gets wasted because they can’t build strong character dna, Learn to be part of a team, or have disciplined habits. They get passed by overachievers with slightly less talent at the time. 3. Opportunity - This is especially for NIL players, but also see it in The NBA. College players are making money, but also have the ability to 10x-20x their earnings (which will never happen again in their lives). The fact that some of them still see themselves as non professional players is wild. They need to see themselves as a business and reinvest in their development (every player is different based on what they get from their school- some may need on court, some performance, some mental, etc.). Having someone looking out just for them will allow them to navigate the ups and downs of a season and maximize their impact that should result in higher earnings and better opportunities.

Meet Players where they are It’s typically easy to see the areas that younger players need to get better at, but we also need to assess where they are at mentally and meet them where they are at. This way we continue to find incremental growth, teach them how to work and how to learn, all the while not killing hurt love for the game.
