I spent 11 years at one startup, from its uncertain early days through IPO and beyond, and was promoted all the way to vice president. And yet, I struggled to narrate my career, to the point where I sought people out just to help me label myself.
I eventually developed a framework that helped me understand my own experience. I began sharing it with people in my circle, and I was surprised by how well it landed, not just as a way for people to understand themselves, but to understand the people around them and how to set them up for success.
Chemists, Chemical Engineers, and Plant Managers is the most personal essay I've shared on Seeing the System.

Do we think a good answer to the "Why anthropic?" question on their application is "I want to have a seat for humanity's last game of musical chairs"?

I can think of no better example than what I see going on at Turo.
Turo has said that short-lead-time bookings are riskier: more incidents, more downtime. The difference must matter because theyโve thrown the kitchen sink at the problem.
And yet, hosts still behave in ways that push bookings toward the last minute. Why? Thatโs the question at the center of my latest essay, ๐๐ช๐ด๐ฌ ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ต๐ณ๐ฐ๐ญ ๐๐ถ๐ด๐ต ๐๐ณ๐ข๐ท๐ฆ๐ญ ๐๐ฐ๐จ๐ฆ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ณ.

Five years ago Kevin De Bruyne made himself the highest-paid player in English Premier League history. Without an agent!
He quantified his value to Man City, benchmarked himself against his peers, found the gap, and made it impossible to argue with. The value was already there and he made it possible for everyone to see it.
It's the whole game of value-based pricing: closing the gap between perceived value and the actual value that you offer.
This #pricingmoment is 60 seconds on the best value-based pricing case study in all of sport.
It's a real miss not having regional cuisine at these World Cup matches.
The logistics would be insane, but can you imagine?
Imagine the stadium concessions going full cultural warfare.
Spain side: Massive paella pans cooking live, jamรณn ibรฉrico stations, patatas bravas with alioli, and horchata or Rioja to wash it down. The scent of saffron and seafood drifting across the stands during build-up.
France side: Duck confit frites, fresh baguettes with rillettes or terrine, maybe some escargot for the brave, and crรชpes or macarons for dessert. A little Bordeaux or Champagne kiosk because why not.

Penalty kicks would be more interesting if they were like basketball fouls fouls; the player fouled is always the one to take the kick.
(1/n) Offices were never only about work. They were the last place many adults had a built-in, socially acceptable reason to be near other people all day. Remote work emptied the office of people.
(5/n) Activities that share this DNA, serious practice with built-in downtime, are exploding in popularity. You see it in run clubs, ham radio, and climbing gyms. These categories have the right shape to hold what's coming. There just aren't nearly enough of them.
(6/6) Someone has to create the reason for gathering. That someone might as well be you.

I stopped into Blue Whale yesterday to get a pair of jeans hemmed.
Another customer walked in behind me and asked the owner "Why only denim?"
Without missing a beat, the owner replied "Because denim is what I love."
The thing people miss when they think about niching down is how narrow you can go. Every service and every price he offers is listed on the front window. And I couldn't count the shelves of jeans queued up behind him.
Do you know what's even better than an article about why shareholder primacy is broken? An article on the same topic that includes *cute illustrations*.
Shareholder primacy started as an argument for accountability: managers should serve their principals rather than their own pet causes. Have you ever wondered how this turned into an excuse for companies sacrificing themselves at the altar of short-termism?
I did, and it's the topic of my latest essay.
