On this day, 26 September 1907, following the Imperial Conference in London, King Edward VII by royal proclamation raised Newfoundland from a colony to Dominion status.
She was one of the oldest colonies in the British Empire. Our long lost sister. For forty two years she stood on her own, outside of Confederation, a real British realm with her own Prime Minister, her own anthem, and her own colours.
She wasn't to last, as the Depression, war debt, and the rot in St. John’s and London broke her.
Personally, I find the whole ordeal to be a tragedy. Newfoundland was her own thing, her own place in the Anglosphere. We should never have allowed her to fall that easily. But we did...
Today would have been her Dominion Day.
