I strongly condemn the raid carried out earlier today by the Department of Homeland Security on the DC home of Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar (@Ilhan). This is a state-sponsored attack against a political enemy, led by a fascist, and it’s a stunt to distract from Trump’s failures.

“When one department in Wisconsin has our data, they all do.” My deep thanks to MKE County Supervisor @justinbielinski (2nd pic) and his colleagues supporting immediate action to remove Flock cameras from our parks. (1/

MPD and MCSO would like you to stop yelling at them about Flock cameras, though. And to just get used to mass surveillance, already. That’s why they’re already shifting the conversation to different manufacturers, other surveillance tech. (See the attached screenshot!) (4/

I don’t believe law enforcement’s promises, and neither should you. I will continue to follow community’s demands to bag and ban this technology. We can and must stop mass surveillance, and law enforcement abuse of it, in our communities. (5/

Adopting fire sprinklers in new construction, and incentivizing retrofits, is one way to preserve not just housing, but life. Today’s demo by the Milwaukee Fire Department underlines how critical it is to have public policy - like AB661 authored by Senator LaTonya Johnson. (2/3)

That bill, if passed, would help keep the public and firefighters safe. Thank you to the many folks who came out today to see this vivid demonstration of what good policy (or, instead, continuing to align policy to corporate interests) can look like. (3/3)

When I volunteer in shelters to assist folks who have lost their homes - and sometimes loved ones - to residential fires, I often wonder if something could have been done to prevent that loss. Here’s a case where we can and should do more: fire sprinklers. (1/3)

MPD’s Chief Norman’s chief-of-staff has already apologized that he isn’t present. Also their in house expert on Flock is on vacation. Not a great start!
Join Milwaukee Turners, @ACLUofWisconsin , and many others *today* at 5:30pm in Room 301-B at City Hall. We're demanding an end to contracts between the Milwaukee Police Department and Flock (makers of very hackable "automated license plate readers," ie cameras). (1/2)

Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic points out that her constituents are furious, the abuses have been terrifying and outrageous, and that MPD’s self-imposed guardrails are wildly insufficient. She’s right.

Alderwoman Dimitrijevic is also proposing immediate action, along with Alderman Alex Brower, to give the Milwaukee Common Council direct authority over the tech driving Flock. And threatening to remove funding for Flock or Flock-type tech from Milwaukee’s next budget!

Flock's guidance on lobbying city councils makes one thing very clear: these cameras are tools for mass surveillance, and they know it. This flawed, unsecure technology will never be used responsibly by law enforcement. Read more here: 404media.co/own-the-narrativ… (2/2)

Guardrails are permissions. Whether it’s Flock cameras, AI scale data centers or anything else, toothless guidelines developed only with the industries and departments exploting are not a win. They’re a way of diffusing protest and entrenching these inherently harmful…
