This weekend, along with a group of 12 from @AllAboardOhio SW chapter I had the pleasure of taking @Amtrak from Cincinnati to Chicago.
This will be a thread 🧵 of my experience taking the #cardinal line

What happens to a state’s budget and economy once a state-supported passenger rail corridor is up and running?
We looked at five years of comparative MoDOT economic impact data (2021 vs. 2026) for the Missouri River Runner—and the numbers offer a real-world case study for Ohio.

Having a train that takes you directly to the airport is genuinely one of the top 10 things a city can offer. No expensive taxis, no sitting in traffic, no begging someone to drop you off. Just get on the train and arrive at the airport. Every major city should have this.

Pennsylvania is increasing the frequency of their daily Amtrak service between Pittsburgh and NYC November 18th, there are still THREE Midwestern Amtrak routes with only 1 daily round trip, 2 of which are in Michigan.
Midwest needs more rolling stock and more frequent service!!!

Nearly every major city in the country had subway proposals that dwarf anything built and proposed today, and it’s sad we’ve lost that vision.

A person hit by a car at 25 MPH gets bumps & bruises.
A person hit by a car at 40 MPH (15 over) gets a funeral.
Most people don't yet understand the impact of speed. Marketing campaigns should be part of any Vision Zero action plan.
Hyde Park, Oakley, and Columbia Tusculum residents should be demanding these type of bioswale curb extensions on their streets. Especially near areas prone to flooding, large swaths of impervious paved surfaces (parking lots) and near their business districts.
In Hoboken, by 2024, they built 47 rain gardens to not only mitigate flooding, some of the largest of which can detain up to 26K gallons of rainwater, but also to double as curb extensions as part of their Vision Zero efforts! Hoboken hasn't had a traffic death since 2017!
Did you know BART has been installing bioretention areas, often called “rain gardens,” at stations across the system?
These landscaped areas are designed to slow, capture, and naturally filter stormwater, removing pollutants like harmful hydrocarbons, heavy metals, and debris. #EarthDay

Last year some regrettable cost cutting decisions were made about foodborne pathogen testing, ending 28 years of screening for cyclosporiasis and quickly catching and quenching several outbreaks. Now we still have no idea what the source of this outbreak is. This is the price!!!
CDC cuts back foodborne illness surveillance program
The CDC's FoodNet program has reduced required surveillance from eight foodborne pathogens to two, a move some experts warn could leave the country more vulnerable to outbreaks.
