Let's dispel the notion that Mayor Zohran Mamdani is a communist or a socialist. He is not. Mamdani is an Islamist. And Islam has no room for competing ideologies. While communism and Islam share some structural scaffolding, they are actually diametrically opposed. In other words, the belief systems are incompatible. Each defines belonging by rejecting kinship, bloodlines, nation, and family as primary identities in favor of the ideology. Both beliefs rely on authoritarianism because the failures of the systems are so pronounced that the ideology must be enforced. Both systems promise a utopia that is never reached because the ideas don't actually work in reality. And proponents of both systems rely on the claim, when their systems fail as they always do because they are deeply flawed, that it was never applied correctly. But the differences are greater than the similarities. As Islam scholar Dan Burmawi put it, "Islam and Communism are not the same. Their metaphysics differ, but their structure of authority is strikingly similar: the group is supreme, the individual is expendable, and order is maintained through ideological conformity enforced by power." Islam is not truly aligned with communism but instead uses it as a tool. Ayatollah Khomeini did this very effectively leading up the Islamic Revolution. Yet, he was explicitly anti-communist and anti-Marxist. He rejected atheistic materialism, criticized communism for its views on property and society, and in 1989 wrote a famous letter to Mikhail Gorbachev urging him to abandon Marxism for Islam as communism collapsed. While the Iranian Revolution temporarily allied with leftist groups, Khomeini’s ideology was theocratic and rooted in Shi’a Islam, not Stalinism. In fact the new Iranian regime purged the very leftists that helped put it into power. The "red-green alliance" that many reference as proof of alignment is actually performative. It serves Islamists' long-term goal of Islam the state that necessarily excludes communism and leftism. They conduct the dance because they see leftists as useful tools, not because they share any ideological beliefs. To an Islamist, a leftist is no different than any other infidel. And when power shifts to Islamist rule, leftists retain no special labels or beneficial treatment. Iran's purge is a perfect example. Put simply, Islam is a theocratic, scripture-based ideology centered on divine sovereignty and sharia. Communism is a materialist, atheistic ideology centered on class struggle and economic determinism. They are distinct. Mamdani is not a communist or a socialist. He is an Islamist. He merely uses communism to gain and maintain power. His goal is Islam, which is a state built around sharia. His ideology does not allow for communism or the required atheism that goes along with it. Those things are the antithesis of the purity that Islam demands. And it is not just Mamdani. He is merely following the path mapped out by others decades ago. The biggest danger is that he's really good at it.
