A jet sends out sound in rings that spread at about 343 metres per second. As it speeds up, the rings in front get squeezed closer together, and at the speed of sound they pile up into a single wall right at its nose. Once it flies faster than that, the rings fall behind it in a cone, and anyone on the ground hears nothing until that cone sweeps over them, which is the sonic boom. Sound on 🔊

Sometimes all it takes is one more try.
But that last one only works because of all the ones before it.
Don't stop at 99.

A gear with four pens attached. each pen draws a different layer, and the result is this beautiful glowing mandala.

Jupiter has three big moons called Io, Europa and Ganymede, and they're locked in a rhythm 🪐 Every time Ganymede circles Jupiter once, Europa goes around twice and Io four times.
Each time two of them line up, they play a note, and together they make a perfect 3-against-2 beat. The glowing lines between Io and Europa slowly bloom into a rosette.
Real NASA/JPL data.

Have you ever seen a light and water show in person? This is my own simulated version over Marina Bay, Singapore, with every laser, fountain jet and droplet fired by the orchestra. One of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. 🌃
Every Marble Meets at the Same Point
An ellipse has two magic points, its foci. Launch a marble from one, let it bounce once off the ellipse, and it always lands on the other. Every path is the same length, so every marble arrives at the same instant. The music is written to the maths: each harp note is a launch, each bell is a convergence, and the orchestra grows as the marbles multiply.
