A California sheriff says 60% of illegal cannabis growers he encounters in one subdivision are Chinese nationals. That single neighborhood may produce over $2 billion a year.
Siskiyou County’s Shasta Vista, beneath Mount Shasta, went from empty lots in 2017 to thousands of plastic hoop houses by 2021. Deeds often list Chinese names living out of state, LLC buyers, and money wired from China.
Raids keep finding banned Chinese-labeled pesticides that have burned and sickened first responders. Workers are recruited on WeChat, then work off debts. Water is stolen. Neighbors report shootings, robberies, and kidnappings.
The sheriff has 62 officers for 6,300 square miles. Unlicensed cultivation is often a misdemeanor. Growers rebuild after every raid.
When a criminal operation this large runs openly for nearly a decade, is it still an enforcement problem, or a policy failure?

UPDATE: This gets better.
On August 31, Washington received Amazon’s WARN notice for another 121 layoffs.
Then on September 1, literally the next day, Amazon posted new jobs in INDIA for the Amazonian eXperience and Technology Departures Team.
In other words, the same Departures organization whose director is signing American layoff notices is actively adding headcount in India.
Including people who will work on Appeals for departing Amazon employees.
Amazon’s own job posting explains the role:
“Our organization delivers best-in-class service to Amazon employees and alumni throughout their Appeals journey. As a member of the HR organization, you will handle confidential and sensitive information, as well as demonstrate strong integrity and ethical behaviors.”
You really cannot make this up.
August 31: Vani’s name goes on a government notice documenting another round of American job losses.
September 1: Amazon starts advertising more jobs in India for the Departures organization she leads.
An Immigrant from India signs the WARN notice.
America loses the jobs.
India gets jobs.
And when an employee wants to appeal what happened, an Indian, in India handles the appeal - but they’ll do it while ‘demonstrating integrity and strong ethical behaviors.’

More layoff rumors have been surfacing at Amazon, so I went digging through the latest WARN notice.
It turns out, Amazon IS cutting at least another 121 jobs in Washington and 148 in California starting in October.
Washington state layoffs include:
13 Software Development Engineer I
12 Software Development Engineer II
12 Software Development Engineer III
15 Applied Scientist II/III
3 Manager III, Software Development
So 37 software development engineers are getting cut.
Then I checked the visa filings.
On March 31, the Department of Labor certified an H-1B LCA for Amazon Web Services for a Software Development Engineer III in Seattle making $220,100 a year.
Case I-200-26083-724548.
But what really caught my attention was the filing is for CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT, with the requested employment period beginning September 20, 2026.
Look at the timeline:
Amazon tells Washington it’s eliminating 12 SDE III positions.
September 20: the employment period begins for an H-1B worker with the exact same title in Seattle.
October 1: the layoffs begin.
I think it’s completely fair to ask:
Why is Amazon continuing H-1B employment for an SDE III in Seattle, while eliminating SDE III jobs in Washington at essentially the same time?
Then I looked at who signed the WARN notice.

So, I looked deeper - Her story makes this even more interesting.
Vani came to the United States from India for graduate school at West Virginia University. She appears in WVU payroll records, and her graduate research acknowledged support from NASA and NSF programs.
She then landed an entry level software engineering job at Amazon.
Over time, she worked her way into management, left Amazon for Microsoft, became a Principal Engineering Manager there and then boomeranged back to Amazon during the pandemic hiring boom.
Today she’s the engineering director for Amazon’s Departures organization and her name is on the government notices announcing that American workers are losing their jobs.
That’s quite an American opportunity story.
I’d like to know whether the Americans on these WARN notices are being afforded the same opportunity.
Because you have Amazon telling the Department of Labor it wants to continue H-1B employment for an SDE III in Seattle, while telling Washington it’s eliminating 12 SDE III jobs.
Maybe there’s a perfectly reasonable explanation.
Let’s see it.
How many H-1B workers is Amazon continuing in occupations it’s simultaneously cutting?
How many Americans selected for layoff were considered for other open positions with the same title?
How many new or continued H-1B petitions did Amazon file for those occupations between its January layoffs and this WARN?
And what role, if any, does Amazon’s Departures technology play in determining who stays and who goes?
Those are questions Congress should be asking.

I caught NYPD traffic ticketing only non muslims outside New York's biggest mosque that governor Kathy Hochul just spoke at.

I was banned from tabling. The administration prevented students from coming inside to ask questions. “Catholic” student protestors demanded the Church bend to abortion.
This indoctrination is happening on college campuses across America, including at “Catholic” schools. Let’s be clear: you cannot be Catholic and support abortion. The backlash I faced here is in direct contradiction to the Church.
