Today the chess world feels a lot dimmer to me.
Jan Timman’s games, his words, and his puzzles shaped the way I see the chess. I’ll miss his insights and the brilliant magic in his ideas.
Rest in peace, my dear legend💔💐.

Words can’t describe how heartbreaking the passing of my coach, Daniel Naroditsky, is.
Just a few days before the Grand Swiss tournament in Uzbekistan which took place a little more than a month ago, I asked him to coach and accompany me.
Even though it was a last-minute request and he had to travel across the world to reach Samarkand, he booked his flight and figured everything out within hours. That’s who he was, always there, never hesitating to help.
We spent an amazing half month together. I’ll always be grateful for those days and everything I learned from him.
Danya was the most genuine person I have ever known.
I’ll never forget our late night bullet matches over the past 10 years. he was the only person in the world who regularly beat me in those.
Danya, your legacy lives on forever.
I’m sure somewhere up there, you’re playing blitz and discussing history with the greats.
If only Kramnik had said he couldn't imagine Danya was in such critical situation, I wouldn't think he is inhuman. Speech is free. But now claims he knew Danya was on the brink. So if you knew, Mr.Kramnik, why did you keep banging on him?

I never said you ruined anyone's life. I asked a question if it is worth it to ruin a young life over a game that they may or may not have cheated? If you feel someone cheated, just report them and move on. Or don't play online.

I was trying to keep this out of my mind, but while retrieving some photos for a friend, I came across this one from the SuperNationals in Orlando (May 2025). It’s not the last photo I took of Danya (I saw him again this summer in Wisconsin) but it was the last time we talked.

Completely heartbroken. Daniel was not just someone I played thousands of games with on @chesscom and @lichess - he was a brilliant mind and a gifted teacher. (1/3)

@advorkovich @FIDE_chess Please, take action and bring justice for Danya and all of us!
FIDE will establish a special prize in memory of GM Daniel Naroditsky. FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich (@advorkovich) shared this on social media.
It is the saddest and most tragic day for the world of chess. Daniel Naroditsky has passed away at age 29. He was a bright young man. He was special, he was something else. He was my favorite; the most excellent and dedicated chess coach and streamer.
You'll be missed, Danya.
I used to sympathize with Kramnik when he joined twitter, and believed he had noble intentions. But the evolution of his conduct has proven how wrong I was. Now I believe Kramnik to be a sort of remorseless psychopath.
What a humble nice fellow was Daniel Naroditsky.

It's difficult to come to terms with the news we heard yesterday. Danya was so loved in the chess world. He was incredibly talented, as a chess player and also as a teacher, writer, and commentator. His passion for chess shone through when he was commentating and when he was competing. He was full of personality, fiercely intelligent, witty, funny, and most of all very kind and generous. It's impossible to overestimate how many people he affected in the chess world, whether friends, colleagues or people he taught and brought into the game.
I still vividly remember our two games from the U.S. Championship, in 2017 and 2021, split one win apiece. I can only wish we would have played more.
It feels like yesterday we were playing blitz and other board games in Germany earlier this year, but now also like an eternity ago.
My heart goes out to his family and friends. Rest in peace Daniel Naroditsky.

I am heartbroken by Danya’s passing. We both grew up in the Bay Area, and I looked up to him from a young age. I vividly remember our first blitz games when I was nine, he was kind and generous with his advice afterward. Years later, I ran into him on a flight home from the Reykjavik Open. I nervously approached him, but his warmth and willingness to talk immediately put me at ease. As my chess career continued, we played countless blitz games, and I credit a large part of my improvement to those battles. Danya’s kindness, wisdom, and love for the game left a lasting mark on me. I offer my sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones. We will all miss you dearly.

My thoughts are that if you see chess as just a game like any other, then it sucks.
I personally really don't see it that way. It has unique history and cultural standing and should not get reduced to be measured only by numbers.

Yasser Seirawan just told a killer story:
Lasker smoked the worst smelling cigars. During one tournament, the players all chipped in to buy him good cigars so they wouldn’t have to endure it.
But when Lasker sat down to play Nimzowitsch, he brought the old bad ones. Nimzo quickly ran to the arbiter to complain.
The arbiter asked Lasker why he wasn’t smoking the new cigars?
Lasker: “But I only brought it, I haven’t even smoked it.”
Nimzowitsch: “Yes — but the threat is stronger than the execution!” 😂
