𑣲𝄞...The Things We Can't Forgive...𝄞𑣲
(Closed starter for @MENOFMAYHEM189)
𝑇he clubhouse was the last place Caroline wanted to be right now, and yet, here she was, waddling through the familiar entrance with one hand supporting the aching weight of her huge baby bump and the other clutching her car fob. At eight months and seventeen days pregnant with twins, she was officially over pregnancy, over being uncomfortable, over having to get up approximately six thousand times a night to pee, and over the fact that twin A seemed to think her ribs were an excellent place to practise gymnastics.
Twin B, who she suspected was her son, wasn't much better, mind you. They enjoyed lounging out on her bladder. Maybe a little too much.
Between the two of them, she was fairly certain they were attempting to rearrange her internal organs in preparation for their grand entrance into the world. Possibly bringing some along for the ride.
And she was doing all of it without her husband beside her.
That was the part that hurt the most.
Jax not being there.
Not the swollen feet or the backache, not even the fact that she could no longer see her own feet without leaning forward and performing a small miracle. Which she had since given up on weeks ago. Favouring slip on flats instead. She only hoped they matched, or at least were the same colour. But it was the absence of the man who was supposed to be sharing all of this with her. The man who should have been rubbing her back when she couldn't get comfortable, even holding up the bump to give her a few moments of respite for her poor hips and back. And bringing her whatever she fancied at two in the morning, and talking to their twins through the enormous curve of her stomach while they kicked beneath his palm.
Instead, Jax Teller was now living somewhere else, and Caroline was living with a heartbreak she couldn't seem to put down long enough to catch her breath. And she really didn't have time for all of that. She still had her birthing plan to figure out. Which wasn't like her to leave it until the last minute. And now she was doing that alone.
They'd been separated for a few weeks now.
Weeks of angry conversations, unanswered messages, awkward handovers of the boys, and a thousand things left unsaid because neither of them seemed capable of speaking without finding another reason for her to find to hate him even more.
Even when he was being nice to her. Which angered her even more. Because she wanted to be mad at him. To stay mad at him.
And then there was Dawn Tragger.
The name alone was enough to make Caroline's stomach twist in a way that had absolutely nothing to do with the twins. And her fists ache to hit something.
Jax had been drunk. He'd slept with another woman. And somehow, despite every apology he'd offered, every explanation he'd tried to give, Caroline couldn't seem to get past the fact that he'd made a choice that had shattered something inside her. The piece of her heart she carried that had once belonged to him.
She'd loved him with everything she had. Even if she still did. Her pain was outweighing her love for him. As well as her constant anger.
She'd given him her heart, her trust, her loyalty, her family. She'd built a life with him, raised their boys with him, and was now carrying two of his children while trying to figure out how to survive the fact that the man she'd always considered her person had managed to make her feel like she wasn't enough.
Made her feel worthless.
And most of her, made her feel like she didn't mean anything to him.
She knew alcohol could impair judgement.
She wasn't stupid.
But she also knew that being drunk didn't magically erase responsibility, and she was tired of feeling as though she was supposed to forgive him simply because he regretted what he'd done.
Regret didn't undo it.
An apology didn't erase it.
She wanted actions, not words. Words meant nothing to her anymore.
And loving someone didn't +)
Her voice caught.
She looked down at her belly, smoothing her hand over the soft fabric of her jumper. "But I can't, can I?" She shook her head before he could answer. "Because every time I think about letting you back in, I remember her. I remember what you did. And I wonder how I can possibly trust you again when the one person I was supposed to be safest with was the person who hurt me the most."
She closed her eyes for a moment, gathering herself. Taking some calming breaths.
"I know you're angry with me. I know you think I'm being stubborn, and maybe I am. And because you know any of these cros, any of the women who get wet at the sound of your name, would have already forgiven you. Maybe I am holding on to this because I don't know how to let it go without feeling like I'm telling you what you did was acceptable."
She opened her eyes again.
"But I can't just switch it off, Jax. I can't wake up one morning and decide that it doesn't matter anymore. I can't pretend that you didn't sleep with another woman while I was at home, pregnant with your children, believing that we were still a family."
The words tasted bitter. Tasted burnt on her tongue. Leaving a bad aftertaste behind.
She hated saying them aloud. She hated that they were true. She hated herself for even saying them.
"And I don't know what you expect me to do with that."
For a moment, she simply stood there, looking at him.
Her husband.
Her estranged husband.
The man who still had the ability to hurt her with a single word, even when she was trying desperately not to give him that power. And right now, she was faling. Falling behind her own lines she had drawn for herself.
A small movement beneath her palm reminded her that she wasn't alone, not really. She had two little hearts beating beneath her own, two babies who would be here soon, whether she and Jax managed to repair their marriage or not.
She had to think about them.
She had to think about Abel and Thomas, too.
And she had to think about herself.
She couldn't afford to let their world become another casualty of what had happened between their parents.
Caroline wiped quickly beneath one eye before a tear could escape.
"All I am asking is that when the boys are with you, you look after them properly. Feed them decent meals, make sure they get enough sleep, make sure they're happy. And if you need help, ask me. I will never refuse to help you with our children, no matter how angry I am with you."
Her lips pressed together. "Because they deserve parents who can put their feelings aside long enough to do what's best for them."
She paused, swallowing the lump in her throat. "And I need you to understand something else." Her gaze held his, her expression firm despite the hurt written across her face.
"I am not your enemy, Jax. I have never wanted to be your enemy. I am your wife, even if we're not living together right now. I'm the mother of your children, and I'm carrying two more of them. I am the woman who has loved you through things most people wouldn't have stayed for. That most people would have called the cops on you for."
Her voice softened, almost against her will. "And I still love you." The admission slipped out before she could stop it. And she knew there wasn't any way to get them back inside her head.
For a second, she looked almost startled by her own words.
Then her face hardened again, as though she could somehow take them back by sheer force of will.
"But loving you doesn't mean I have to forgive you before I'm ready. It doesn't mean I have to pretend I'm not hurt. And it certainly doesn't mean you get to decide when I'm supposed to be over it."
She took a shaky breath, shifting her weight as another ache settled into her lower back.
"Because I'm not over it. I'm nowhere near over it." Her eyes flickered towards the common room, where she could hear Thomas laughing at something.
That sound brought her back to herself.
Her babies were waiting.
She had a few +)
precious days with them, and she wasn't going to spend the entire afternoon arguing with their father, no matter how much he irritated her. Or she wanted to punch him in his ridiculously gorgeous face. Or how badly she wanted to knee him in the balls.
Caroline straightened as much as her pregnancy would allow and brushed her hair back from her face. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to get our boys' things together, get them home, and probably spend the next hour explaining to Thomas why he can't have chicken nuggets for every meal for the rest of his natural life."
A faint, exhausted smile tugged at the corner of her mouth, although it never quite reached her eyes. "And before you accuse me of being dramatic, I would like to remind you that I am currently growing two entire human beings. I reserve the right to be dramatic whenever the hell I please."
She turned to leave, then stopped. For one brief moment, she allowed herself to look at him again.
Really look at him.
There was so much she wanted to say. So many things she wanted to ask. So many questions that had haunted her in the middle of the night when the house was quiet and the twins were moving beneath her skin. Keeping her awake, along with the burned in images of him with her.
Did you think about me? Did you think about our family? Did you regret it the moment it happened, or only when you realised what it would cost you?
But she couldn't bring herself to ask.
She wasn't sure she could bear the answers.
So instead, she swallowed the ache in her throat and spoke the only thing she could manage.
"Please don't make this harder than it already is." Her voice was barely above a whisper now. "I don't have much left in me to fight with you over everything, Jax. Not when I'm trying to keep myself together long enough to bring our babies safely into the world."
She placed one hand beneath her belly, supporting its weight, and turned towards the common room.
She needed to get the boys home.
She needed to eat something, put her feet up, and somehow make it through another night without the man she loved beside her.
And she needed to stop hoping that one day he'd look at her and understand just how much damage he'd done.
Because hope was a dangerous thing.
Especially when it came to Jax Teller.
And Caroline was beginning to realise that, no matter how much she loved her husband, she couldn't keep breaking her own heart trying to find her way back to the man he'd been before everything fell apart.

𝑇he evening air was bitterly cold, carrying that unmistakable autumn chill that seemed to settle deep into your bones no matter how tightly you wrapped yourself in your clothes. A faint breeze swept through the streets of Charming, stirring the fallen leaves scattered across the pavements and sending a few dancing along the kerb as Caroline Forbes made her way towards her car. The icy air nipped at her cheeks, turning the tip of her nose a delicate shade of pink, and she instinctively tucked her chin into the collar of her thick coat.
She hated the cold.
Well, *hated* might have been a slight exaggeration. Caroline Forbes was perfectly capable of appreciating the beauty of autumn, the changing colours of the trees, the crispness of the air, and the excuse to break out her favourite boots and cosy sweaters. What she wasn't particularly fond of was having her face practically freeze off before she'd even made it from her front door to her car.
There was a difference.
And, frankly, she thought it was a very important one.
Vitally important. Given that this was ladies night!
Still, she supposed she ought to be grateful for the little things. For one, it hadn't started raining yet. Given the time of year and Charming's apparent determination to drown everyone in the occasional torrential downpour, that was practically a miracle. And ruin her hair at every available opportunity. The sky hung dark above the rooftops, clouds gathering in the distance, but for now, the evening remained mercifully dry.
She could work with that.
As long as it didn't suddenly start a downpour and land her expertly made up face in the gutter.
Reaching her car, Caroline quickly unlocked the doors and slipped inside, closing the door behind her with a satisfied sigh. The familiar warmth and quiet of the interior immediately offered a welcome escape from the miserable weather outside. She slid the key into the ignition, started the engine, and promptly turned the heating up.
All the way up.
Because if she was going to spend her evening looking fabulous, she wasn't about to sacrifice a single finger to hypothermia in the process.
Or any of her toes.
Because she had plans for the night.
Plans that involved shots snd dancing on the bar.
Or tables. Or whatever else her and her bestie could get themselves up on. Hopefully keeping their necks intact.
Holding her hands in front of the warm air vents, she wiggled her fingers and watched the windows begin to clear. Her shoulders relaxed as the warmth slowly crept back into her body, and she settled into her seat with a contented little hum. Only once the car had reached a temperature she deemed was acceptable did she finally shrug out of her thick outer coat and toss it onto the back seat.
There.
Much better.
Beneath it, she wore a lighter jacket that complemented her outfit perfectly, because Caroline Forbes would sooner be caught dead than leave the house wearing something that didn't work together. Her jeans fitted just right, her boots were practically made for this time of year, and her sweater was the ideal combination of cute, comfortable, and effortlessly stylish.
And hot. Showing off one off her hottest features.
Autumn was, without question, one of her favourite seasons when it came to fashion. It was the perfect excuse to bring out the boots, experiment with cute layers, and put together outfits that made her feel like she belonged in a ridiculously expensive fashion magazine.
But then again, any season was a great excuse to put together outfits to perfectly match each season.
And she priced herself in her appearance.
Besides, there was something undeniably satisfying about looking fabulous without appearing as though she'd put any effort into it.
Of course, Caroline had put plenty of effort into it.
An entire hour, to be +)
this was too good an opportunity to pass up.
The woman already hated the sound of Abel's bike. She probably hated the sight of his property, the people who visited, and the very idea of anyone having a good time within a five-mile radius of her precious little house. She wasn't letting this perfect opportunity go.
Caroline couldn't imagine why.
The woman made Tig sound like an absolute delight.
And, naturally, Caroline was about to make her evening considerably more interesting.
She leaned forward and pressed the car horn.
*Beep. Beep-beep. Beeeeeep.*
She paused, listening to the sound echo through the otherwise quiet street.
Then she did it again.
*Beep-beep. Beep. Beeeeeeeeeep.*
A laugh escaped her before she could stop it.
"Oh, come on," she muttered, shaking her head with exaggerated innocence. "I'm just announcing my arrival. It's called being polite."
She gave the horn another quick tap.
Somewhere nearby, a light flicked on.
Another hard tap this time.
Caroline's grin widened.
Bingo.
She could practically picture the neighbour standing at her window, peering through the curtains with a face like she'd just bitten into a lemon. Or one that accidentally chewed on a wasp. The mental image alone was enough to make Caroline's evening.
She wasn't usually deliberately obnoxious.
All right, that was a lie.
She could be obnoxious when the occasion called for it, and she was a firm believer that some people made it far too easy. If the miserable old woman wanted to spend her evenings complaining about Abel's existence, Caroline was perfectly happy to provide her with a few additional reasons to keep herself occupied.
After all, it gave her other neighbours a break.
It was practically community service.
And Caroline had always loved being in thr community spirit.
Her attention shifted back towards the house just as she spotted Lola making her way outside.
Caroline's face immediately lit up.
There she was.
Her partner in crime.
Her fellow troublemaker.
The woman who was about to be dragged into an evening of questionable decisions, excellent gossip, and the sort of laughter that would probably leave them both hoarse by midnight.
Caroline rolled down her window, resting one elbow against the door as she watched Lola approach. She gave her a once-over, her expression full of theatrical approval, before leaning across the passenger seat and pushing the door lock open.
"Well, look at you!" she called out, her voice bright with amusement. "Taking your sweet time, aren't you? Honestly, Lola, some of us have been ready for girls' night since approximately three-thirty this afternoon."
She glanced towards the house behind her friend, then back towards Lola, her eyebrows lifting suggestively.
"Tell me you've said your goodbyes, kissed your baby girl, and informed your ridiculously handsome fiancé that he is officially on daddy duty for the evening."
Her smile turned positively wicked.
"Because I swear to God, if Abel tries to tell me he needs you home by ten, I'm turning this car around, marching straight into that house, and explaining to him the very important difference between being a devoted father and being a clingy pain in the arse."
She paused, then waved a dismissive hand.
"Actually, no. Forget ten. We're not putting a time limit on this. We have the entire weekend ahead of us, and I refuse to waste a single second of it worrying about what time we should be home."
Caroline reached over to the passenger seat and moved her handbag out of the way, making room for Lola to climb in.
Then, with the confidence of a woman who had absolutely no intention of behaving herself, she flashed her friend a grin. Her whole demeanour was positively wicked.
"Now, get your gorgeous arse in this car, because we have places to go, things to drink, men to ignore, and an entire evening of being fabulous ahead of us."
She glanced towards the neighbour's house one more time and gave the horn a final, cheerful +)
little beep.
Just because she could.
Then her sapphire eyes returned to Lola, sparkling with mischief. And she have her a playful little wink.
"Come on, my hot bitch!" Caroline called, laughing. "Drag that junk in here! It's ladies' night, and we are going to be anything but ladies!"
She reached across to turn the music up, the beat filling the car as she settled back into her seat, one hand resting on the steering wheel and the other drumming impatiently against the door.
A wicked smile spread across her face.
And she glanced at Lola.
"Oh, this is going to be a "very" good night."
And judging by the grin she was wearing, Charming had absolutely no idea what was coming.
They weren't going to just paint it red. They were going to chargrill it and leave it a pile of smoking ashes.
