☀️ Summer fruit is officially on the menu. 🍓
And according to MAST’s own @RuchiMathurMD Mathur, berries are one of her go-to choices when it comes to supporting healthy blood sugar.
In a new feature from Verywell Health, Dr. Mathur shares why she reaches for a handful of fresh berries—especially during the summer months.
🍓 Why berries? They’re packed with fiber and antioxidants, and pairing them with protein can help slow carbohydrate absorption and support steadier blood sugar.
Her favorite summer combo? Fresh berries + plain Greek yogurt. 👀
And if you can't find fresh berries? Frozen works, too.
So as you make your summer grocery list, don't forget to grab a pint (or two!). 🫐🍓

Great to be a part of the dialogue @voxdotcom
🚨 Gut health is having a moment—but how much of what you see online is actually backed by science?
From #GutTok's 6+ billion views to endless supplements, cleanses, and "microbiome hacks," it's harder than ever to separate evidence from hype.
That's exactly why @voxdotcom went straight to the experts.
In this feature, MAST's Dr. Ruchi Mathur joins leading microbiome researchers to answer one simple question: What does gut health actually mean?
Drawing on decades of research, Dr. @RuchiMathurMD explains what we've learned about the human microbiome, why the small intestine is a critical—and often overlooked—piece of the puzzle, and how rigorous science is transforming our understanding of digestive health.
At MAST, we're committed to replacing misinformation with evidence and advancing research that leads to better care for patients around the world.

🎥 New Video Abstract | Sex Differences in the Small Bowel Microbiome
What if understanding the differences between the male and female microbiome could unlock more personalized approaches to digestive health?
In our latest iScience publication, the MAST team leveraged samples from the REIMAGINE study to investigate how the duodenal microbiome differs between males and females. Unlike many microbiome studies that rely on stool samples, this research examines the small intestine directly.
Our findings identified distinct sex-specific microbial signatures, highlighting the importance of considering biological sex in microbiome research. These differences may help explain why certain gastrointestinal and metabolic disorders present differently in men and women, while advancing the development of more precise, personalized diagnostics and therapies.

📢 New Publication Alert!
We're excited to share our latest publication in iScience: "Duodenal microbiome profiles exhibit sex-specific differences." 🎉
For years, much of what we've known about the gut microbiome has come from stool samples. Using samples collected directly from the small intestine through our REIMAGINE study, our team examined how the duodenal microbiome differs between males and females—and what those differences could mean for health and disease.
Our findings revealed distinct sex-specific microbial signatures, reinforcing the importance of considering biological sex when studying the small bowel microbiome and developing future microbiome-based diagnostics and therapies. These insights may help explain why certain gastrointestinal and metabolic conditions affect men and women differently, paving the way for more personalized approaches to care.
This work is another step forward in our mission to better understand the small intestine and its role in human health.

🦠 Introducing Meet the Microbes!
The gut microbiome is home to trillions of microorganisms, each with its own unique role in our health. In our new Meet the Microbes series, we'll introduce you to some of the bacteria researchers are studying and explore what makes each one important.
🔬 First up: Escherichia coli (E. coli)
When you hear "E. coli," you probably think of food poisoning. But the story is much more complicated.
Most strains of E. coli are harmless and naturally live in the intestines of humans and many animals as part of a healthy gut microbiome.
So why does E. coli have such a bad reputation?
Some strains carry genes that allow them to produce toxins or cause infections. These harmful strains can lead to illnesses such as diarrhea and urinary tract infections—but they represent only a small fraction of all E. coli.
The beneficial strains help produce vitamins, compete with harmful microbes for nutrients, and contribute to a balanced gut ecosystem.
🧬 At MAST, we study how changes in the small bowel microbiome may influence digestive health and disease. Understanding which microbes are present, and in what amounts, helps researchers better understand conditions like IBS and SIBO.
The microbiome isn't simply made up of "good" and "bad" bacteria—it's a complex community where balance matters.

🎆 Celebrate the Fourth Without Forgetting Your Gut! 🇺🇸
The Fourth of July is full of burgers, hot dogs, fireworks, and great company, but it doesn't have to end with an unhappy gut.
Here are 6 simple ways to keep your microbiome happy while enjoying the holiday:
💧 Hydrate first. Hot weather + rich foods = your gut will thank you for extra water.
🌈 Don't skip the sides. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and fiber-rich foods help support a healthy microbiome.
🍔 Enjoy your favorites—mindfully. You don't have to avoid BBQ classics, but slowing down and eating until you're satisfied can help prevent digestive discomfort.
🚶 Take a post-meal walk. Just 10–15 minutes of movement can help support digestion.
🍹 Balance alcohol with water. Staying hydrated can help you feel better during and after the celebration.
💙 Know your triggers. If you live with IBS, SIBO, or another digestive condition, choosing foods that work for your body can help you enjoy the festivities without sacrificing comfort.
Healthy gut habits aren't about restriction—they're about feeling your best while making memories.
✨ What's your favorite healthy BBQ side? Share it in the comments below!
Happy Fourth of July from all of us at MAST! 🎆
