#SecurirtAlert Al Shabaab used Suicide Drones against FGS and Southwest State Forces in Baidoa After more than nine hours of continuous fighting, heavy clashes are still ongoing inside Baidoa, involving FGS and Southwest State forces against Al Shabaab and forces aligned with Laftagareen per Security source. The fighting has spread across multiple parts of the city, with significant casualties reported on both sides. Al Shabaab has reportedly used suicide drones for the first time in the fighting, targeting military bases, alongside VBIED attacks against security positions. Al Shabaab fighters have also positioned themselves inside tall buildings, enabling them to maintain sustained fire and prolong the fighting. Meanwhile, F-16 fighter jets are conducting repeated strikes against targets around Baidoa, underscoring the intensity of the ongoing military response. Al Shabaab is reportedly maintaining a significant presence around the city, creating serious operational difficulties for the Southwest State administration and restricting the movement and functioning of its forces. On the Thursday night, of November 18, 2021, Tamati Mauti and his fiancée, Michelle Akinyi, checked into their Room 708, located on the Ibis Styles Hotel's 7th floor in Westlands, Nairobi. According to Akinyi's statements to investigators, the couple had planned the overnight stay as a weekend getaway ahead of their upcoming wedding, which was scheduled for the following month, December 2021. Akinyi stated that they spent the initial part of the evening together in their room. Few minutes to midnight, Mauti left Akinyi sleeping in Room 708 and went downstairs to the hotel's bar. At around 11:55 PM, CCTV on the ground floor and elevator captured Tamati Mauti exiting his fiancée's room on the 7th floor and heading up to the rooftop Sky Bar area. Henry Tamati Mauti was a 29-year-old Kenyan citizen who worked in Nairobi and was heavily involved in his local community, CITAM Karen church, and local politics. Friends and peers described Mauti as "Bwana Raha" (a man who loved life, fun, and bringing good vibes), he had a strong interest in karaoke, music, and local politics. His father and brother described him as a staunch, committed Christian who was very active in church activities. His peers noted that he rarely missed mid-week prayers or church activities when he was in Nairobi, and he was highly respected by the church clergy. Kate Mitchell was a 42-year-old British national who dedicated her professional life to international humanitarian and development work. Originally from Whitley Bay, North Tyneside in the UK, she was described by her family and colleagues as a deeply driven, courageous, and energetic person who dedicated herself to improving the lives of others. Mitchell spent 14 years as a senior project manager for BBC Media Action, the international development charity arm of the BBC. Her work focused on using media and communication tools to tackle global inequality and poverty. She was highly respected for managing projects across several African countries, including South Sudan, Zambia, and Ethiopia. Mitchell was usually based out of London and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. However, due to the escalating civil war in Ethiopia, as a safety measure, she reluctantly relocated to Nairobi, Kenya, where she was staying at the Ibis Styles Hotel on the 8th floor, Room 812. According to official testimony presented by hotel staff during the court inquest at the Kibera Law Courts, on the night of Thursday, November 18, 2021, at around 8:30 PM, Mitchell arrived down at the hotel's rooftop Sky Bar alone. According to the waitress, she scanned the menu on her phone, ordered a meat wrap and a glass of white wine, asked for her bill, and paid in cash. At around 12:00 AM, midnight, Mitchell was still at the bar when Tamati Mauti came downstairs from his room on the 7th floor and joined her at her table. According to the waitress testimony, the 42-year-old Mitchell asked the 29-year-old Mauti what he wanted to drink, and then ordered a beer for him and another glass of wine for herself. Mitchell subsequently ordered and paid for a second round of the same drinks for both of them. The waitress left the bar area briefly to attend to a room service request. When she returned a few minutes later, both Mitchell and Mauti were gone from the table. At 12:42 AM, CCTV captured Kate Mitchell leaving the rooftop bar and entering the elevator alone to head down to her room on the 8th floor. At 12:44 AM:, a separate camera angles captured Mauti leaving the bar table just a couple of minutes behind her, taking a separate lift. Because there are no cameras inside individual guest corridors for privacy reasons, investigators had to rely on the hotel’s electronic door lock data to piece together their movements.
