What is true human welfare? The answer, I think, has something to do with Christian humanism. churchtimes.co.uk/articles/2…
“Although Nigel Farage thought it was worth getting a theologian on board for Reform UK, I don’t think he lies awake at night thinking about his soul. I may be doing the man an injustice, but I don’t believe he cares about profound theological questions.” theguardian.com/uk-news/2026…

Ayoung man who has lived with different kinds of disadvantage all his life is elevated to a position of influence and privilege. In this position he is exposed to consistent, merciless attack, until there is no way back. It ends in death. Summarised like this, it has an almost archetypal quality. The proverbial Martian observer would very likely catalogue it with the rituals of sacrificial scapegoating chronicled in many pre-modern societies – the outsider selected for both sacred dignity and ritual humiliation so that some existing order can be consolidated by an act of collective violence.
One of the many things we ought to be reflecting on in the wake of the shocking and tragic events leading to the death of Jason Arday is the nature of the shaming rituals of modern culture, the careful gradation of verbal violence from judicious headshaking through to unbridled, annihilating, joyous venom. The philosopher Bruno Latour wrote that “we have never been modern”; it is sometimes alarmingly clear that we have never been “secular”. We still repeat the ceremonies of public humiliation and cathartic sacrificial violence. A debased media culture and the fever-ridden jungle of online comment are just another iteration of habits deeply rooted in human society-building. We should not deceive ourselves into thinking that we have outgrown any of this.
On the contrary. The mechanisms of scapegoating are all around us – and are not confined to the political right. Well-meaning efforts to offset the myth of the scapegoat can easily end up colluding with the process. As has so often been pointed out, tokenism sets people up to fail. Unless change is systemic, thought through, and unless it is intelligent about risk, emotional cost and the specific vulnerabilities of individuals, it is simply sucked into the magnetic field of the sacrificial drama: exalt or highlight the victim, then punish and expel.

Yesterday HQ ARRC hosted Dr Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury.
Dr Williams delivered a lecture examining faith, authority, and the interaction between religious institutions and political power. His insights reinforced the importance of cultural and moral awareness in developing a more comprehensive understanding of adversaries and the operational environments in which they operate.
Professional military education engagements such as this strengthen our ability to think critically, operate effectively, and maintain a broader perspective across the spectrum of modern conflict.

ROWAN WILLIAMS: THE DIABOLICAL IS EVERYWHERE by Freddie Sayers (@freddiesayers)
Last week, Rowan Williams referred to American political culture as ‘demonic’. Predictably, it caused a stir on social media, with Right-leaning Americans duly expressing outrage and crying foul. But what exactly did he mean by it?
He told the UnHerd Club:
‘I’m rather old-fashioned in believing in the Devil. I actually do believe that there are malign forces in the universe and that people who may not have consciously malign or diabolical designs can be manipulated and exploited by those destructive forces.’
‘The Devil is at work in you and me. The Devil is at work in every institution.
‘The demonic is the erosion of standards of truthfulness in public life and the normalisation of violence in word and deed.’

Sarah Mullally was installed as Archbishop of Canterbury on 25 March. The ceremony was – appropriately – joyful and splendid. But I would guess that Sarah is feeling just a bit of that never-the-same-again apprehension. Now you are Out There. You’re responsible for something happening that is in every way beyond you. You will be exposed to unrealistic expectation and unreasonable attack. You know you are going to fail in all sorts of ways. And you need to know that the weight and importance of what is put into your hands is such that it will survive your failures. I hope there will always be people around to tell Sarah this.
